2 Attachment(s)
Got this 15x8 back from Atlas Plating in Houston, Tx. a few days ago. They do good work, I’ve used them before.

Looks fantastic!!!

Do you have any before pictures? It looks great to say the least.

No before pic but it wasn’t terrible. While the wheel was there I called n asked how much he’d charge to replate an old rusty N5 Sun Tach cup I had and Alex said send it to him n no charge. Put it in the same shipping box as the wheel.
I appreciated that. |
question on the chrome - did they do the center caps as well - look real nice!
also - on orig cragers, at the lug nut area, they are usually a satin finish vs full on chrome and polished. any thoughts on this - can they do that orig finish. would mine sharing or PM what the price per wheel was? many thanks....ed |
I bought a couple sets of Cragars new in the 70's and it seems like the satin was just a coat of paint. If I remember it scratched fairly easily if a person wasn't careful with the tire iron on the nuts. And yes, we used 4 way irons to install/remove nuts back then. Only shops had air wrenches and cordless tools ?? They were as much a fairy tale as Dick Tracy's shoe phone...

Did they cut the center out for rechroming? I had been told any wider than a 4” rim the centers had to be separated from the rim chromed then welded back together!
|
The originals had the satin finish in the center your referring too. I never have seen any that were replated that weren’t chromed in the center like this. They chrome all of it. Maybe talk to them and see if they could do that. 🤷
The center cap is a set of Non R NOS ones i bought years ago. Never have asked them about replating center caps. No they don’t cut them apart. Eddie, the cost is based on the condition of the wheel. Take some good pictures n call Alex and he’ll give you a quote on the job. I started the Cragar SS endeavor buying a pair of skinnies then the 8 inch reverse. Searched forever to get someone to replate them and finally found Atlas. The cost has gone up quite a bit since I first dealt with them but what isn’t high these days! You guys have seen pics of my 67 with the Cragars on it haven’t you? |
dont recall seeing the 67.......
|
I was always under the impression that the reason the centers were satin was because Cragar did not take the time to polish them in the centers. If that is the case, just ask the rechromer to polish all but the centers.
|
they look fantastic. As we all know, original design Cragars in good condition are getting difficult to find. Now, the all-important question; how much did the rechroming cost and what was the turnaround time? Regards

That’s what I assumed Rick. A way to save some on the plating process.
A few older pics of the 67 with Cragars on Eddie. I never liked the tires on the front they were too small. I’ll be putting larger ones on this time around. |
cragar finish

here is an nos cragar that shows the inside finish.

I had always assumed that those recesses were somehow NOT chrome plated because torquing the lug nuts down could tend to crack the chrome plating, especially after repeated removal and installation of the lug nuts.
|
Agree Bill, many years ago there was a topic on here about that.
That was the consensus for why the webbing was painted. |
I was always told it had something to do with the chrome plating has a tough time with getting around inside corners that are to far away from the contact of the electrical current. In fact a friend just had a pair of old school ladder bars chromed and the shop told him the chrome that will be around the inside corners of each bend the chrome will be real thin or non existent!

How much was the cost of restoration?
The Cragars on our Z28 have scale after 10 years of street driving use |
Is that it?
Well, you guys missed a few things. The valve stem cap had 12 grooves, not 10. And the air valve was made with brass, not steel. Now, the next one will be tough, but a true enthusiast knows you need 1968 air in the tire. Hard to find but worth the effort.
I was actually watching Up In Smoke for about the 9th time when I read this thread. Man. I miss those days. It brings a tear to my eye every time I think about it. |
