Hey Chicago/Illinois members
Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some ideas from you all that live in the areas near O’Hare airport. My son just got a promotion where he’ll be moving to that area and working at O’Hare airport. Initially, he will be looking for a community within a reasonable distance of the airport for his commute and will probably be looking to rent, preferably a house with a garage.
Can you recommend an area that might be good for him? He is a car guy and has a couple cars that he likes to wrench on so a space would be cool that offers that. Thanks in advance for any thoughts, ideas or leads?!! Bary |
If he doesn't mind family oriented neighborhoods... Villa Park, Schiller Park, Franklin Park. A lot of bungalows with driveways.

Arlington Heights, DesPlaines, Elk Grove Village, Barrington, Schaumburg - those put you within 10 minutes of the airport and all have train access to downtown.
Further south, Lombard, Glen Ellyn but you’ll fight some crappy tollway traffic. |

Huntley, Wauconda, a little more laid back and has what he wants, those put you at the 35-40 minute mark, if you use that for a radius reference on the map. traffic is like clockwork as to when it clogs up. Further up 294 north is nice, depends on the budget.
I’d stay away from anything south of Lombard / route 38. To much traffic. I travel a lot, it’s horrible down that way for driving. I live down that way to so I speak the truth on that Lol. I’m down by Plainfield and I’m 50 minutes from Ohare other than rush hour, 1-1/2 during. |
I used to live in Palatine. It wasn't far from O'hare....Had a small town feel back then (because it was small back then, LOL in 1973).
It's a bit bigger now! |
What about Cabrini Green?

Probably 45-60 commute to Ohare in rush hour. -- I think once your son figures out his budget he can look at listings and go from there. There are a lot of little towns/cities ringing Ohare. |

The Stephen’s Convention Center. Usually not busy except when some amateur car show comes into town around the end on November. Plenty of space, although not sure how much the HOA fees are:biggthumpup:
Cheers Dave PS; congrats to your son! |

So the nice thing about the little towns ringing Ohare is you can get back and forth without getting on the highways. I'd try to avoid commutes that require him jumping on 90/94. That stretch of 90/94 can easily result in another 20 minutes of crawling along.
Personally this is what I would do, he could access Ohare from streets like Mannheim, Irving Park, lots of options. I assume the airport workers can get in via other entrances. |
I live in Itasca, just west of O'Hare. I'm at the terminal parking within 15 minutes most days. Very small suburb with 9K people, very good schools, northeastern-most corner of DuPage County. Taxes are high, but due to the # of corporate offices here, they are on the low-end of the spectrum for DuPage. The good houses usually sell without being listed, but I know the local brokers so I could get him some visibility if he's interested. Tim's been to my house, he will probably say it's a POS, but I like it well enough to tolerate being in Illinois.

I live out near Rockford (Belvidere area) I can be in the parking deck at O'hare in an hour or less. If he is willing to extend his commute a bit he will find tremendous value out here - especially if he wants a space with a place to work on cars.
