Cars "Coming Out of the Woodwork"

Folks,

I was catching up with a good friend last week who has retired and does restorations and parts dealing as a full time gig. He mentioned that the number of old cars surfacing after years of storage has increased over the past 6-12 months as the owners pass, or finally decide to sell. This surprised me, as I haven't noticed any incredible cars on the market lately...although I was able to buy a sweet CTB '70 Z/28 short block out of an estate a few weeks ago.

Just curious - are any of you guys seeing an uptick on interesting cars/parts for sale?

My dad(younger baby boomer) and I talk about this often. In the next 10 years or so you’re going to see a huge number of cars and parts for sale as that generation ages out of the market. The youngest baby boomer is now 61 years old. A majority are now in their 70’s. Eventually whether stuff gets sold to pay bills or in an estate sale, you’re going to see a huge uptick of stuff hit the market. Where the prices go is anyone’s guess.

While Hemi’s, COPO’, SCJ Fords, and the like will always have value, I do personally see a future where the prices drop substantially due to their prime market having to sell stuff to afford a nice retirement home in Florida.

Hell just today Parker of Backyard Barnfinds posted a video I’m involved in of a missing(aka not on the registry) Super Stock AMX the guy bought new. He’s now 84 and looking to sell it, though I will withhold my opinion on the price. There’s a lot of cool stuff still hidden in garages all over the country. And we’re nearing the point where there’s going to be a huge turnover in the market due to demographics.

Absolutely

Yes, there have been several auctions of entire collections due to owners passing in the past year alone.
Michael DiCarlo on FB keeps coming up with NOS parts all the time lately. His 401 should be about stuffed from the astronomical prices he seems to get for this stuff too.

All I have left are C3 Corvette parts that i have had for 55 years need to clean out the basement & garage

I have noticed an increase in my restoration customers contacting me about selling their cars that they have owned for many years. I have not seen a rise in parts however and possibly just the opposite, they seem to be impossible to find lately. Because of where I am located, I seldom come across cars for sale either from estates or people contacting me so I cannot say that is on the rise either. I did however recently come across an original owner LS6 survivor that was very nearby and the owner passed. It is currently in my shop deciding where to go with it next. Buy it, sell it or get it running for the family.

I will also concur; while attendance at the swaps around here can still be sparce there's often one time sellers that have come out with some interesting stuff...

Why just yesterday, I found this - I've never seen one in person before...

While I don't typically deal in complete cars, rather parts and memorabilia, I have heard of some interesting cars surfacing and some that were just rumors that have proved genuine.

It is certainly an interesting dynamic change coming up...

Cheers all, and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving you turkeys!
Anthony

I do a booth once a year at a National event, I saw 2 young guys buying parts, I hope it picks up, I see the hobby in trouble, one of the boys wanted a 8 track radio , I had 3 for sale, he was about 18 years old, he thought about buying it for 2 days, I knocked off 150$ just so he’d get it. He was w/ his dad, came by like 12 times to think about it. lol

The last 6 months has actually been kind of slow for me, but I haven't been advertising lately either. The past few years I've bought out and cleaned out several estates of cars and parts. Once my kid's car is done, I'll start advertising and actively buying again.

I'll likely be buying some stuff on an estate auction this week, though.

More cars available up here and the prices are down.Definitely a buyer's market.I got lucky and sold my Camino last March when market was better.I'm 75 now and just can't see myself buying another car.I miss having one it doesn't make sense cause I think the times they are a changing! I'm also selling off my parts.Don't want my wife dealing with all my "stuff" in case something happens to me.

I am also 75 and sold my cars but have a pickup truck load of C3 corvette parts and tires to sell. Package deal in the Boston MA area.

The Portland Or. area is typically not a place to sell parts anymore. I've had an ad loaded with '69 chevelle and '66 corvette stuff that gets next to 0 interest.
