Console Gauges 1969 Z/28

5 Attachment(s)
So, I happen to be under the dash tracing some wires and noticed a harness for Console Gauges. My question is: Are gauge harness prewired from factory or is it safe to assume they are added only when U17 is optioned

The console and the console & gauges used different harnesses than the non-console harness.

So if I have a harness already underneath dash, does the mean car was console with gauges

Kurt

If I have gauge harness underneath dash near radio, would that mean I had console with gauges

Just to clarify, the main dash harness (runs from firewall to glovebox area) was wired differently depending on the options.

If a console was optioned, the main harness received a large rectangular connector. Wires installed in connector were based on additional options.

Manual with console only received the wires for the ash tray light. Grey in color mostly.

Auto with console received the lights for the shift indicator, neutral safety, reverse lights and ashtray. Easy to see with the two large purple wires for neutral safety.

If console gauges were ordered with either of the above, then a lot more gauge wires were added (many colors). Plus tach & clock wires were added to the main harness.

So all you have to do is look at the number of wires and their colors to determine what you have. :)

Kevin

I will take a few pictures tonight and post.

Take a Clear Photo of the Face (aka Pin Side) of the "Console Wiring Harnes Under Dash 12 pin-Connector" & we can decode the Pin out arrangement to tell VERY easily if the Harness was set up for D55 Console Only or D55 & U17 Console With Gages.

Added some pics in original thread

I’ll take another pic of face of harness

So, I can't see the wire colors in the rectangular connector the way you took that pic, we will wait for the new pic. Here is a post on Team Camaro showing the gauge wiring diagram:https://www.camaros.net/threads/wiri...gauges.467971/

Also the pic with the purple wire connector is for the clutch safety switch mounted on the pedal support.

Kevin, thank you. I just uploaded 2 more photos

OK, the number of pins match mine, but I am not seeing the red common wire in position C or the brown wire in position F. Do I see cut wires there?

Here is a pic of mine:

I do see some wires were cut under the dash. I will have to trace them back.

Would that mean the car was console with gauges?

its looking likely. Does the car have a tach in the dash? And clock in the center over the steering column? They were part of the gauge package with a console.

Strange thing is I have tachometer but gas gauge in the middle. Not sure if the gas gauge is original in the middle

KevinW 08-17-2025 08:56 PM

Gas gauge in the center was a separate gauge package when a console was NOT ordered. The console connector would not have been there at all with that order. Someone changed something!

You need to trace the gas gauge wiring to see if looks factory or has been messed with.

I’ll get under the dash and start tracing the lines. I have the Classic Wiring diagram which I just got

That's not correct.
U16 was the tach-only option. The gas gauge was in the center. The console was optional. I've seen many cars with a console and U16.
U17 was tach and gauges. Tach and clock in the cluster, gauges on the console. Console was required.

Agreed, something has been changed here.

KevinW 08-18-2025 12:29 PM

Kurt, Thanks for keeping me honest. :)

lpar1969 08-21-2025 09:39 PM

? If all late build z/28’s (mine is 10D) came with Tachometers would that mean wiring was in the engine harness and not through the firewall under fuse block?

Lou
