55 Chevy

With all the cool posts recently about 55 Chevy's I thought it might be nice to start a thread about Tri-5 Chevrolets. This is mine I have owned it for 42 years 3rd owner original Tucson sold car. Originally it was a 265 PG car. It now has a crate L88 (ZL-1 cam), M22, and a 12 bolt 411 Moroso Brute Strength posi rearend. It has all original body panels zero rust, and the doors shut like they are new. The exhaust is screamin purple hornies newer style bolted to the headers.

Let's see what everyone else has. Thanks, Larry

Mine and my son's 55s.

Mine was a Delray 6cyl 3spd. Harvest Gold, white top, turquoise and beige interior. Dad bought it in 1975 for $60, and sold it to me in 2017.

Cale's is a 210 6cyl 3spd, Neptune Green with turquoise interior.

I found this '55 for Dad a few years ago. It was a 265 powerglide car. He has had several in his lifetime and wanted one last car to fix and drive. We were going to build it together. His health has gone down and he's not able to work anymore and decided to sell the car. I told him that I wanted it, so he gave it to me. I would love to get it together in time for him to drive it, but I don't know if that will happen. He wanted a 327 in it, so I built a nice mild one to go in it, along with the M20 that I built for my Camaro many years ago. I'm narrowing an Impala 12 bolt for it with 3.55 gears. The frame is finished and new floor is installed. I just have to finish my shop so I can get the car done.

Love the tri-fives.
Keep um coming.

Love your '55! A long time drag racing friend has a twin '55 BelAir post he's owned since '58, solid black with blue interior. Built as 265 Powerpack, 3 Spd OD, been 327/Muncie since the early '60's.

The first car I drove was a 56 Belair two door post. I’d set in Dads lap and drive n shift three on the tree. He’d gas, clutch n brake. Days gone by but not forgotten.

----I can't tell, but I see what appears to be a crack from the corner of the valve cover to the front exhaust bolt hole. Please tell us it isn't .....Bill S

No, it's just a casting line. These are Speedway aluminum heads. I believe they are Chinese castings. I have a set of 461 heads that we considered using, but Dad wanted to use these aluminum heads that look like the early high performance heads.

Some of you guys have seen the car I am building now, but seeing how we're on a run of 55's here lately, here are some pics for those interested in 2 door post cars. It's a low mile car that was owned for 38 years in CT, and was restored in original colors about 7 years ago by it's long term second owner.

I have since stripped it down again, and performed a modern frame off into black and white and will finish it off with a black and white DelRay interior that has now started to go in. It now has a fresh drive line with a 383 stroker, Tremek TKX 5-spd, and a Moser 4:10 Posi rear. All fresh suspension, disk brakes and lots of goodies throughout. I need to finish up the wiring and put the front end back together this winter so I can have it dialed in for spring.

Looks killer Graeme!! I love all these ‘55’s.

----I had a black and white 55 Delray wth b+w interior. Delray interiors are the coolest (almost custom appearing)! It was a stocker and very nice with its 265 2-barrel. My intension at the time (late 70's) to pump it up a bit, but a friend talked me into selling it to him. Yours will be killer set up like that. The body looks absolutely pristine!....Bill S

My dad got a '55 210 2 dr, 6/3 speed when I was about 10. It was very rusted and worn out by 1966 and he bought a new Malibu that fall. The '55 sat in the yard all winter and into the next summer. Both parents worked day jobs and what is a 15 yr old boy to do with that sitting there ??? At first, I just drove it up and down the driveway, which was about 60'. Got really good at the clutch/throttle coordination, but wanted to expand into shifting the 3 speed. Eventually got brave enough to drive to the end of the dead end street and shift thru all the gears. Only risk of that was my uncles house I had to go by. Couple weeks go by and nothing from them, so it's time to dig ruts with the tire and fill them in again.

Shortly after that started, my dad requested I accompany him to the hardware store on a Saturday. I thought that was odd, as he didn't need me to go there with him, but it was a request, not an option. On the way home, he pulled over on the straight road to our road and got out, came around to the right door and told me to scoot over.... OH-OH !! He said my uncle told him I was very good at driving a manual transmission car from all my practicing with the '55 and that I should drive the last couple miles home...:eek2: Nervous as hell, but did fine getting to the house, shut it off and handed him the key. He never said a word, but the '55 went to the junkyard the next week..:frown:

Mine (yellow car in post #3) is a Delray, but I hate the color combination (yellow with turquoise interior) so I will be changing mine to a Black & White Delray interior.

Had to look up the Delray interior, forgot what they looked like.

My former '55 was a true 150 business coupe which had no backseat, just a shelf. Miss that car.

NorCam 11-05-2024 10:12 PM

Yup,

Pretty sure the 150 Business Coupe had fixed rear glass as well. The car I have now had a custom tan/white interior refit when it was restored in 2017. While it was decent, I wanted the B&W version of the DelRay interior to update the car with once it was repainted in B&W. Headliner is now done, armrests are changed into B&W (penguin style), and the seats are now recovered and ready to go in with the door panels once I finish the wiring. Here's what it did look like, and the way it will soon look.

The way it looked when I bought the car...

https://i.ibb.co/W0LcqyX/FMTP7733.jpg

The way I want it to look except I'll have a candy cane shifter and belair trim on the dash.

https://i.ibb.co/Dp0bfNY/455121836-1...31056634-n.jpg

The pictures that inspired the change to black and white. I copied the 2 tone handles seen here but haven't decided on belts and buckles yet. I'll likely run deluxe GM like the Camaro's used.

I bet that car sounded killer!!!!:worship:

cheveslakr 11-06-2024 01:50 PM

It really did, 3.5" borla XR-1s right out the side. I had a couple neighbors that'd come out to hear it while I warmed the motor.

NorCam 11-07-2024 01:46 PM

I did another 55 post build in 2010 through 2012 and here was the finished product. Big block Chevy 565 that on pump gas made 732 hp naturally aspirated, a tremec T56 trans, and a 4 linked 9" with lots of stainless to wrap it all up.

(LOL) With that 3" stainless exhaust, I actually had a couple neighbors that came over to thank me when I moved out of the neighborhood in 2014. :-)

It was deep sounding with all that motor, and it was loud through that exhaust system!

My 55 gasser

My 55 gasser survivor with unknown past. Guy I got it from was going to restore it to stock. Had a different frame and full quarter panels to replace the radiused wheel wells. I told him I was glad to get it before he ruined it. 327 with Duntov cam, edelbrock c4b intake, 650 Holley double pumper and chrome fenderwell headers. Trans is an M21 muncie and stock diff with 4.10 and a posi. A ton of fun to drive and gets lots of attention.
