When we looked at the car, it had the center console full of old timeslips. Unfortunately, some jackass stole them all. We have pictures, but the slips are all gone.

Very cool! What’s the plan?

Have fun with it. Keep us updated as you make progress and get it running!!!

Eddyville Dragway....that brings some memories...
Won the Super Stock season points championship there in 1976.

Was this Z in MN or IA??

Derek69SS 06-22-2024 10:30 PM

It was from Oskaloosa, IA

Super cool

Always wondered if that car had the original engine or not. I've driven by it hundreds of times since the late 90's here in Osky, it sat outside the original owners dad's house for years with a tarp on it, I stopped and looked at it once and got stung by a wasp. It was moved to another house by the old football stadium about 5 years ago but I hadn't seen it for the last 2 or 3 years. Nice to know it finally found a good home, congratulations Derek.

Would you happen to have any pictures of it where it sat?

The auctioneer said someone tried to steal it about 3 or 4 years ago. Owners found a strap hooked to it and tracks in the yard, but must not have been able to move it.

It sat at 1701 Carbonado Road in Oskaloosa forever until it was moved a few years back. If you look up the address on Google maps you can see the car still sitting there!!!

You have to go by the house and come back from the east on Google maps and you'll see it sitting to the right of the house, straight off the road. I'm attempting to add a screenshot of it now but I've never done it before so knows if it will work?

carnut4life 06-24-2024 03:47 AM

In the 90's it was sitting up closer to the house on Carbonado Road but that is where it was sitting when I looked at it and got stung by the wasp in 2015 or 16. After it was moved from Carbonado Road it ended up on the corner of North Market St and H Avenue East. Google maps doesn't show the address for that house so unfortunately I can't give you that address.

Someone shared this picture of it from several years ago on Facebook.

cook_dw 06-26-2024 02:03 PM

Great find. Any chance you would share the vin? If you don't want it public but are willing to pm it so I can add it to the db myself and a few others have. Thanks.

Sent you a PM.

Well... I just tried signing up for MCACN "Barn Find" display, and it apparently sold out while I was filling out the info. :dunno: I never displayed there before, so I assumed I needed an invite until someone told me otherwise.

Too Many Projects 06-28-2024 01:19 AM

Send Bob Ashton an email and explain what you have and a couple pics. He may well "find" some more room for you...
They outgrew their little corner last year and had more on the main floor.

We pulled the diff cover off to see what we have inside.
Knowing it was an 1/8-mile racer, I expected some deep gears... 43/7 = 6.14 gears :eek2: Pinion has several chipped teeth.

I have an extra set of 4.10s to put in it, and get back to its factory ratio.

LetsFNgo 07-25-2024 11:33 AM

Please leave the 6.14’s in it. That’s awesome.

big gear head 07-25-2024 11:56 AM

Looks like nobody has had a punch on the bearing caps yet. Please don't put punch marks on the left bearing cap. The left cap carries most of the load and punch marks make weak areas on the cap.

As much fun as it would be to try them just once, we do intend to make the car driveable. 4.10s are bad enough, 6.14s with 28" tire would be 4400rpm at 60mph. :eek2: Also, the chipped teeth on the pinion left some chunks of metal floating around inside.

69 Post Sedan 07-25-2024 01:42 PM

Wow…..6.14 gears!!!! That pinion had to be REALLY small……not too many teeth touching the ring gear. Which can lead to broken teeth very easily.

Awesome project!
Does anyone know if a fiberglass hood like that is available??

Derek69SS 07-25-2024 08:42 PM

The hood was from Moroso in the early-70s.

Unlimited Products still sells the scoop, but I'm not sure if anyone sells the hood.

Too Many Projects 07-25-2024 09:21 PM

It will be fun to see if the carrier/pinion gears are still the original or if they were swapped for OTC COPO parts with the gear change.

The posi springs look rather beefy...

big gear head 07-26-2024 12:20 PM

You are right Mitch, those are not the original 200 pound green springs. Those are the 800 pound springs used in the heavy duty Eaton and Moroso units. If it has the 16-10 gears then it's a COPO unit. If it has the 17-10 gears then it's a HD Eaton or Moroso. If it has 18 - 10 gears then it's a standard unit that has had the spring pack changed. Those 800 pound springs are a lot of fun to get in there!

I have an NOS Moroso hood, exactly like that one, that I’m considering selling. I can send you a PM if you’re interested.

We have it home from my buddy's and up on my lift now. He went through the brakes and swapped 4.10s back in it removing the 6.14s. Now I get to work on trying to make it run. We're trying not to disturb or even clean anything that doesn't absolutely need it. Original master cylinder and calipers were rebuilt, but it needed a few brake lines and all of the hoses replaced.

As crusty as the car looks from the outside, it's surprisingly very solid underneath for a a car that sat in the Iowa dirt for 40 years. All of the car's structure is very solid and not even pitted much. The car sitting on a hillside probably saved this, as any moisture would have run off quickly instead of sitting in a damp puddle for decades.

VIN stamp on the transmission matches the car, and it even still has the tag attached to the side cover. Things are coming apart but will go back together soon. I'll work on the LT-1 out of the car, and fire it on the run-stand before it goes back in. #7 has some rust on the cylinder wall, so it's going to need at minimum a hone and re-ring. Hopefully I can remove the stuck piston without damaging it.

Too Many Projects 09-27-2024 06:08 PM

Wow, that's cool that it still has the original trans !
Daily dose of PB Blaster in the stuck cylinder and it will, eventually, start moving.

I received the NCRS report today.
It was delivered new to Humphrey Chevrolet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

scuncio 10-01-2024 03:00 AM

Very cool! My hometown dealership.

rlw68 10-01-2024 02:28 PM

Nice ! Mine was built at Norwood on 28-Feb and the vin number is about +3000 from yours.

William 10-01-2024 02:56 PM

Bought my first car at Humphrey in '69, a '65 Corvair. They had a Yenko franchise for '67, sold a lot of Corvettes and performance cars.

Small dealership in a congested area, now a soccer field.

We got the stuck #7 piston out, but the cylinder wall is pitted a lot worse than I hoped. I haven't made any decisions yet whether to rebuild or replace the LT-1, but making it run as-is with just a hone and re-ring isn't going to happen.
