It is with a heavy heart that I share the somewhat sudden passing yesterday of my longtime friend and car collecting mentor Gary McKay. Gary was a very passionate and knowledgable collector who had one of the most impressive collections of American musclecars assembled and also a number of custom hot rods that were executed to his vision and standards. I’ve known Gary since the late 1990’s when he came into the shop I worked to look at a car, and we’ve been friends ever since. I was fortunate to live vicariously through his collection all these years and share some really great moments. He was a hands-on collector who managed his own collection until the very end. A good guy who will be missed by all of us who knew him and our hobby will be poorer with his absence.

As per your post Tom, Gary seemed like a really good guy. I feel for you and all his family and friends.

PS - I think Gary would have been proud of your write up.

May he rest in peace. I;ve always heard the old saying "He who dies with the most toys wins". I always thought it should be, who has the best toys wins.

He had a passion and was a winner, no doubt!

One of Gary’s Cars

I’m responding to a one year old post as I just came to Learn of Gary Mckay’s passing. I was very saddened as when I had spoken with him before he was so helpful and engaging even though we hadn’t met before. He was so helpful in informing all that he had done to customize a car I had purchased that was originally his. He had offered me an opportunity to come see him at his shop, but we never got the chance to do that. Due to health I will be selling the car he so brilliantly built. I would appreciate any info I could get to get in touch with his family to see if they have any interest in obtaining this car, since he was the original owner. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Hi, thanks for the post and the memories. Which car do you have? I assist the family in managing the remaining collection. You can email me (breske at comcast dot net) if you'd like to discuss further. I'm sorry your health is leading you to part with your car, I hope things go well for you.
