Steering Wheel Refinish
Has anyone been able to paint 1969 steering wheels. I thought they were plastic, but when I got off the phone with SEM Products tech line, they said the 1969 steering wheels were made of nylon. They he told me that paint will not stick to nylon. Does anyone have any input on this subject?

I scuffed one up real well with coarse scotch-brite pad and shot a base of epoxy primer. No problems with adhesion at all.

I was stumped when the SEM tech told me even with an adhesion promoter the paint will not stick. Are you guys using base coat clear coat or a single stage paint. What paint line are you using.

I used SPI epoxy as the base and a acrylic urethane SS Delfleet Essential color (black, in my case) with SEM World Class clear.

With the clear, it is glossier than original. i wanted the clear for a bit of protection from UV. A satin clear may get closer to original.

They weren’t satin, the plastic was very glossy when new. Not “3 coats of urethane clear” glossy, but definitely not satin.

DAVE, Curious why you didnt use SPI Universal Clear ?????
Anybody know if a Glazing Putty like UPOL Dolphin Glaze would work on Minor Scratches or or will the EPOXY Fill and then sand that.......??? or will Sanding the Epoxy Gum up the paper.......... |
I've done several '69 wheels. If the wheels are really nice and only showing very minor flaws I just sand with 1000-1500, then hand buff. If you're going to repaint and know you're going to cut and buff, then paint a satin or a bit shinier, then cut and buff and your wheel will show the gloss but won't have the depth, which is exactly what the oem finish was. This is my preferred method. Spi epoxy and their SS urethane is the ticket.

Jer, Your saying that the SPI Single Stage Black is NOT too Glossy.
Interested to know if youve used the SPI SS Black on other Restoration METAL Sheetmetal Areas........... Have you used a Flattening agent mixed with SPI SS Black ....to retard some of the gloss............ |
Yes, I use mostly SPI SS black now. I do use a flattening agent and have landed on PPG's commercial line DX10. It's less than 100$ a gal. and one of my jobbers will sell qts, the other don't.....not sure why. I'm restoring a '66 vette now and have used SPI's black on all chassis components and will continue on interior parts.

I have several 1970 Camaro steering wheels .....
Two have minor scratching.........What dia of what kind of pad and what compound (grit) to use with a DA Polisher........ Dont want to sand, scuff prime and paint if I dont have to............ One has small crack on back side where crossbar meets outer ring.. What epoxy material to use to fill crack , but then I'll need to SPI prime and SPI single stage black (which I have) Thanks |

Dave (and others) How did you prep and paint your Steering Column Pieces ???
Epoxy and Aerosol, Epoxy and Single Stage Gun Paint ?????? Ive been polishing my spare wheel(s) with a 3" Micro Fiber Pad on a DA and Meguairs M105.... Works well but still has minor scratches......At this point I dont want to get too aggressive with SANDING and wind up having to Paint......... My Original (70 Z28) Wheel should polish up Nice enough to use without repainting, but I havent worked on it yet......... |
