The Cutlass SX was pretty much a 442 in a Cutlass Supreme coupe body. They were great cars. You rarely see them.
|
Good story about this car. I wasn’t aware of the Cutlass SX model. 👍
|
My brother tried buying a new 1971 Cutlass SX. The insurance was cheaper than a 442 if I remember correctly. The Olds version of a Luxury Lemans back in the day. Bill

A neighbor in the late '70s had one of these and he told me back then that it was a pretty special car. He always took very good care of it. Nice to read up a little more about them.

----Beautiful SX! If it were mine I believe I would have to change out the rear bumper for the correct one and add a new Gardner exhaust as the mufflers are already incorrect. They sort of look like Midas which I can't stand. And,,, That's all I'd do as the car deserves to be as it was supposed to be with the trumpet exhaust.....Bill S

I love the trumpet exhaust of the 442’s, too Bill. The SX could be ordered in the Supreme coupe or convertible. I’ve seen one with the W25 ram air hood, but I don’t know if it was factory installed.

My dad has a 70 sx supreme convertible. I’ve heard there was somewhere between 795-1000 made. They are pretty under appreciated cars. It hasn’t ran in 15 years. i was lucky enough to drive it as my first car in the early 2000s in high school. He refuses to sell it because he knows it will end up with 24” wheels. It’s been in the family since 1979. It has the 455, th400 dual gate with a 12bolt. Nice to see some people that appreciate them!!

I have never seen an SX with a manual transmission. Was it not available with that package? Just curious.

Nortell Oldsmobile in Chicago ordered 50 Pink 1971 Cutlass SX cars, some convertibles. They had to order 50 to get them done by Oldsmobile. I've only seen one since visiting their showroom in 1972 where they still had one leftover.

A classmate in HS drove a pink '71 SX.Well actually his Mother did,and so did he once he got his License. That didn't last very long as we all teased him.
|
That is so funny about your classmate driving the pink SX. My mom wanted to buy the pink/parchment SX convertible, but we shared that car. I said "no way" because I figured the guys would razz the crud out of me. The dealer at Nortell really pushed that car as it was March of '72 and still sitting in the back of the dealership. We got an orange 442 that was ordered by the dealership but wouldn't be in for four more weeks.

That car is somewhat known. Allegedly, according to original owner, the standard rear bumper was a factory installed mistake.

The rear bumper and emblem are the hallmarks of the car that make it the sleeper and classy car it is. |

wow, but no rear sway bar, mounting holes are there. I would expect it would come with an SX 455 package

Very cool read!

I believe a member here has the car listed for sale for around $55,000.
|
Interesting. I was the runner up bidder. I assume highest bidder sealed the deal if reserve was 55. They were in for 53k with BAT fees.
|
I would think so. The price was $55,000 obo. Beautiful car. I was thinking about going to look at it. I want something to drive and enjoy without worrying too much about taking something away from the car so I decided to look more. She is nice!!!
