Hoping someone remembers this car
7 Attachment(s)
I just inspected this 1970 LS6, M22, 4.10 (now 4.88) Chevelle last week for the second owner, Mike C who has owned the car since 1978. The car has all its original drivetrain, interior, glass, and paint but was modified to race. I am currently trying to locate more photos of the car when it was raced at Byron and Great Lakes Dragaway as well as other upper midwest tracks before it was put on the street in the late 70's and was hoping others on here may have more photos or information of the car from its racing days. It was also displayed at the 1981 Car Craft Nationals. Mike told me there was writing on the doors "Big John" and front fenders when he acquired it but was unable to come up with photos of it when it was raced that way. Mike's father bought the car for him for graduation in 1978 from the original owner John Keifer of Northlake, IL. The car has not run since 1982 and work will hopefully begin soon to bring it back to its racing days. Mike is the second owner and the car is well documented but I was hoping I could find more photos for Mike to add to the car's history. Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Thanks to a high school friend of the owner and the power of the internet I received this photo tonight.

You da man Rick!

Wicked story!

Cool! I saw your same pics on FB and hoped someone would start a thread.
Do you know if John raced at GLD or the other tracks? I could ask around. |
Kool Fuel. Love the cool can

The car will be coming to the shop for a thorough cleaning. The engine has not been run since 1982 so in all likelihood that will get torn down and refurbished but NO restoration will be taking place on the car, only a major cleaning. The stories are just way too cool to destroy the history.

Glad to hear that. It seems like you might be enjoying the "preservation" side of the biz as well as the resto side.. Congrats. Idk if I can help with anything but if I can just shoot me a pm or text.

It doesn't get any better than this...period.

Quick car with that 4.88 gear at the strip. 454LS6 Motivation. Nice car for sure.

Gotta love a guy that gets a running, lettered race car as a HS graduation present from his dad. I think I got a card with $20 inside!

neat car, I used to work in Northlake IL where the original owner is from, virtually still Chicago metro area, so maybe its a car sold at Nickey Chevrolet I would suspect based on what it is.
Very scary garage floor under that thing in pics. Great for working on a car though!!! |

Actually was sold through Thompson Chevrolet in Villa Park. Agreed on the pit, very deep as well and had to use a stool to reach the bottom of the car.
