Mecum COPO's - What's your guess?
Let's play a little game.....Three COPOs going across the block in the next few days. Each has their own level of attractiveness depending on what you're interested in. What's your guess on high bid (no fees) on each? If you were going to buy one, which one would you pick?
Hugger Orange - matching number motor, unrestored? or older restoration? https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...-copo-camaro/# Daytona Yellow - low mile restored former race car, correct drivetrain https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...t-copo-camaro/ Dover White - Orig. engine, raced from new, unrestored https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...t-copo-camaro/ |
The orange one had some body work done and paint touched up in the last couple of years right?
I dig the white one. |
I like the white one.:3gears:
|
When Johnnie N. first bought the white race car it had a hole in the hood where the fan had exploded under high engine RPM. He said he wasn’t going to fix it. I wonder if it’s still there.
Hmmm 🤔. |
HO - $185k
DY - $275k DW - $245k Give me the Dover car. |
HO- 140 is has been restored years ago
DY- 185 DW- 125 |
Wow those last two posts have quite a gap in estimates - this should be interesting. I hate yellow cars so I am down to the other two and I would be bidding up that white car all night long, I've always loved that car.

Mick has a better finger on the pulse. I'm just guessing.

I gotta believe these car being COPO's, provenance and being sold prime time should exceed the orange L78. |
Steve you make a good point. I also know the Kiss auctions tend to bring the top money and I may be very low. My guesstimates is based on these factors, the white car has great history but there is no mention of original motor and being a race car it is unlikely, on top of that the car appears somewhat rough and chances are the new owner would restore. The yellow car went thru Indy a couple years ago and if memory serves me correctly bid to I think 180ish and the motor numbers had at the very least been restamped (correct me if I am wrong) so prospective buyers are assuming non original motor. The orange car popped up about 5 years ago setting in the field in Colorado with a number of other rare muscle cars, the car at that time had already had an amateur restoration and had the passenger quarter caved in from an accident while pulling it out of the field, in short may be a numbers car but has to be restored for new owner to be satisfied. I hope I am low on all of these especially since I have three in the garage but it seems that at this sale often times jewelry commons higher numbers than authenticity. If any of these three cars aren't the cars I think they are or remember them to be I will apologize now for misrepresenting.

Before everyone jumps on me I just went back and read the ad for the white car again and it does state the original 427/425 horse. I stand corrected and therefore I am low on that car for sure.

Hugger Orange - original motor, older restoration, sat outside.
https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...-copo-camaro/# 124379N644048 Daytona Yellow - low mile restored former race car, correct drivetrain, NOM https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...t-copo-camaro/ 124379N632994 Dover White - Orig. engine, raced from new, unrestored, low miles https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-53...t-copo-camaro/[/QUOTE] 124379N680286 Condition will matter here. Hard to guess without seeing them. |
Auction price vs. real value.
i believe that its hard to establish value based only on auction prices as many cars trade a year or 2 after the auction for less money. Buyers remorse, misrepresented, alchol consumption, etc. I would guess
Hugger orange 145k Daytona Yellow 170k Dover white 175k Dont think that copos are going to be close to Yenko money as some have suggested. Probably still 100k less . But, its an auction... |
I dont think that "numbers matching " translates to " original to car" or "born with" anymore.
|
Well, two are done...
DY car sold for $220,000 with fees so I think that $198,000 without DW car bid up to $180K and did not sell. I think the HO car goes tomorrow. |
I would go for the white car. As I’ve said before, “ I like ‘‘em a little dirty”. $165,000
|
The white car is my favorite. It has the original window sticker and POP. There’s no makeup on the white car, it’s just an old race car.

i'm pretty sure the Hugger orange car was in a Los Angeles collection in the early 90's
before going to the"outdoors" collection. A client of a friend of mine owned it and he had a drivability problem with it as he drove this car quite a bit, anyway I took it to my Dyno guy and we found a substantial vacuum leak which turned out to be a crack on the lower side of the intake manifold that leaked into one of the ports, somewhere I have photos of the dyno session, intake getting welded ETC, The radial tires give it away. |

We’ll have to consider adding that “prototype” car to the registry

Same as Rebody Challenger thread, are Vins not published ahead to avoid bidders Googling the truth?:confused2: If Auction groups keep their commissions when misrepresented cars returned to sellers, why would they?:dunno:  ~ Pete Bogus Yenko Prototype VIN 124379N549828 aka 124379N549878 in Barber Appraisal. Orange copo had clear coat issues, definitely needed a repaint. Passenger quarter was poorly replaced as the outer wheelhouse was trimmed and not patched along the lip. Did not bother looking any closer but probably also needs drop off repair as well.
