Rotary Air Compressor

I am thinking about getting a Rotary Air Compressor for my shop. The main reason is to supply my media blaster a constant supply of air. My tank compressor runs out of pressure too fast. Does anyone have one of these? What size/hp do you have. I was hoping a 5 or 7.5 HP would be big enough.

I talked to a guy who deals with used compressors. He had a very nice rotary that I was considering buying. He advised against it (mind you if he encourages me, he gets a sale) because I told him it would only be used 3 or 4 days a week. He said they really need every day use, and the more constant, the better. Did not like it for a hobbyist.

That's good to know. I would not use it every day.

I have a 10 hp 220 v single phase Eaton Rotary and use it like a hobbyist. It is fine.

Your mileage may vary.

Does your compressor keep up with media blasting? What psi do you run with it?

Charley Lillard 01-11-2023 11:15 PM

Yes. That's why I bought it. I usually run it at 80 psi.

If you already have a compressor that is in good shape but otherwise just won't keep up with the air demand, you may want to consider just buying an additional compressor that can be used only when it is really needed. It takes more floor space, but is really more efficient for general daily use if you have the room. You can just buy a pump and motor and plumb it into a common tank. Just something to consider.

It does seem odd that the salesman would talk you out of it. Rotary compressors have become the go-to in home A/C. Ours is 20 years old and sits idle for 8-9 months of the year. Still works great.

Now that I said that... I made a comment about our 2007 TSX a couple weeks ago and shortly thereafter, the O2 sensors went out...:rolleyes2:

Don’t confuse rotary with scroll compressors. Somewhat different technology. Most AC compressors are now using scroll technology. Eastwood and Puma have made small home shop sized scroll air compressors with varying degrees of success. They are very quiet and efficient.

Actually, I DID confuse those two. The one I was looking at was a scroll.

Brain fart.

I have thought about doing that but right now my compressor will drop psi after about 10 to 15 minutes (maybe less). I afraid I would only get another 10 minutes with a second compressor.

You can say that again...Oh wait. You did.
