Are you familiar with a black 68 firebird that raced around Detroit in the late 70’s early 80’s?

Have some buddies in that area I can ask them as well I think George delorean may have had a 68 bird w RAV power that raced in the Detroit area but feel like it was mainly street. I know there was a black firebird from engineering that prowled around. Looked it up and the car I was thinking of was Jim wingers car this what you were thinking of? |

I’m with all the stock restorations out there I feel like it’s good to show what made Pontiacs so special in the first place .

Jerry Stealy's original "NEMESIS", Taken, I believe, at Eddyville Raceway in Iowa.
I worked for Jerry twice. The first time while he was service manager at Cordes Pontiac in Cedar Falls Iowa. I was also racing against him in AHRA Super Stock. Made for some interesting Monday morning shop banter after a race weekend as we often ended up beside each other in the final round. This Judge was destroyed in a trailering accident and one of the doors is hanging in Jerry's trophy room. Some of you may have seen Jerry's last Pontiac race car at MCACN, "NEMESIS TWO" Safari wagon, in the Hi Perf Wagon display, now a very fast street car.- Bill W |
I remember that wagon, Bill.

Great pics of some killer Ponchos - thank you. The front shot of the Blackbird just screams "king of the street".

I just talked to Don Breen a few weeks ago. Really nice guy-it's always good to talk to him! Attachment 230116 |

This is one of my favorites , I want to ask him about his trailer it looks like the Stephens Pontiac trailer for my car . Can’t imagine he went out and bought a yellow and black master craft trailer for a carousel red car. But never know I guess, it certainly looks an awful Lot like Stephens trailer. |

Who would have thought there’d be a more people who knew owners here than on the Pontiac sites lol. Just goes to show how the Pontiac sites are with all original restored (stock) cars Vs race or day 2 cars
Didn’t know this car was shown as mcacn that’s awesome That scoop on the wagon looks like the same scoop that ended up on nemesis one . |
If anyone is reading this thread I need a set of square tube lakewoods for the Stephens 69 car . Mine were black so unrestored would probably be best . Prefer not to have to take out a mortgage if possible ;-)
And a clean 70 body for the pro car I have the drive train but need a clean (rust wise) body nose was glass so don’t need that so much . |

In about 1974 we caught a ride in a Cessna over to Elkart IN where Jerry picked up a new motorhome, then across town for a stacked pair of new black Bock Drag Star trailers. |

Jerry's first race car was a '53 Olds Holliday coupe with a Pontiac engine. Then a '57 Bonneville convert, then '58 and '59 Corvettes, both with Pontiac power. I worked for Jerry the second time after he moved down the street to become service manager at the Chevy dealer. By that time he was racing a B/S (I believe) 454 '72 Corvette. He finished his career at Mills Chevy in East Moline IL. Always a tough competitor and class act, Jerry would arrive at the track well prepared and dialed in. Being new to semi-pro racing I learned a lot from Jerry. - Bill W |

Best car I’ve ever owned though . Tesla model X plaid. 1020 hp runs 10.10 after a 2 hr drive ti the track which it’ll drive me to. Damn car is amazing! If you don’t own a plaid RUN out to buy one . Car I’ve had most fun with is probably my 69 RAIV firebird Stephens car or my turbocharged 69 bird that clicks off 9s on pump gas off the foot brake w low boost. But seriously go try a Tesla plaid UNREAL! And mines an X the S clicks of 9.19 STOCK off the showroom floor . And it’s. A family car that’s hard to beat . I feel like it’s the 421 SD, or RAIV of the day. So much damn fun to drive it because the torque is instant. Don’t want to get off topic w this thread though. Happy to open another thread on that car if people want |

The pro stock car ran an 11.50 slick and had a Chevy C type 12 bolt w a center section made by Dana for Pontiac and 5.13 gears also made by Dana according to a 1972 article on the car the axles were summers brothers axles. The engine was a engineering RAV w a developmental RAV intake and 660 center squirters that only a few racers got a hold Of also mentioned in the article . It’s in my 69 now . The car couldn’t really compete w the factory backed hemi teams of the day but it was a match race favorite so there would be. A Pontiac for people to root for and they did well with it because of that . Arnie beswick had the same engine, intake manifold and carbs in his 68 pro stocker but changed to bigger carbs and offset spacers but you rarely hear anything about that car and pictures are even more rare of it. I have some pics of it somewhere but haven’t been able to find them lately Probably on an old computer or something. But there’s a “bee ON video” production (the story of pro stock I think it’s called ) w the Stephens pro stocker and there’s video of the RAV Pontiac pro stocker at an event they state that it was the only Pontiac pro stocker still running w Pontiac power so I m not sure if arnie ran his at all or not the pics o had were of the car w no engine in it and the engine on the stand . The ram Air pan on this steohens pro stock engine was said to be “home made” In the article, but doesn’t look very home made, the cuts are precision w no tool marks you’d expect on a home made set up, I still have it, and it’s identical to One grumpy has on his car in some Pics . Now grumpy and bill Eckstrom were friendly but idk if they copied each others pans or if someone supplied them to them it’s interesting that Pontiac was (allegedly) back dooring parts as was Chevy and everyone else to its racers they even had an aluminum block for the car but never got to race it. The article annoyed some people at GM and that was the end of Stephens racing program |
