1968 Camaro - Possible Yenko

Hello all,
I recently purchased a 68 Camaro from its third owner and am looking for some advice on it. It has been garaged since the late 70's. I believe it to possibly be a Yenko or Yenko non converted car. It has the 140 MPH speedometer, larger sway bar, as well as the Magic Mirror trim tag. I looked on the registry of the 68 Camaros listed and the Vin number for this car is very very close to 2 existing cars on there.
Does anyone know of who I can contact to discuss the car with that would be a bit more of an expert than myself?
Thanks,
Dan

Thanks Pete. I'll upload some pics soon on it Crush.
I've been reading a lot of old posts on here while buying this car over the last few days. I see it was mentioned years ago on here about 6 non converted cars that went to Yenko and that 2 were accounted for. I believe this may be a third one as its factory color was Corvette Bronze. It's had one re-paint in the early 70s and the vin number on it is close to a couple of others towards the bottom of the registry.

Likely one of the 5x Bronze cars as this 09/68 Yenko Newspaper Ad below.
If you haven't seen it already, it's from this thread w/ other great '68 Copo 9737 info...

AggieDan03 05-16-2022 11:38 PM

Thanks Pete. Thats what I was thinking. Vin is super close to the other Corvette Bronze one on the registry that's non converted. What's your thoughts on the value of one of these in a restored state? I would imagine it's less than one with the 427 conversion.

Any signs of added emblems including tail panel area and/or Yenko Tag holes?
What of past owners/when it changed hands/where the car lived?
A few of the '68 9737 MV Suffix Blocks have surfaced over the years, maybe yours?
You're best to hook up w/ Eddie, sYc Member Enio45 as he has an unconverted '68 Copo 9737 too.

Stefano 05-17-2022 02:39 AM

There are Corvette Bronze converted cars as well to include this one.

JoeC 05-17-2022 10:15 AM

there were a lot more then 6 1968 Yenko 396 COPO 9737 Camaros sold .

What engine is in the car now?

Copo_Cartel 05-17-2022 11:44 AM

I would say a phone call to Warren Dernoshek is in order

enio45 05-17-2022 02:02 PM

Ill let the OP say more, but all the data in my call with Aggiedan03, seems to strongly indicate it is one of the "non converted cars" - so now we have 3 located to date.

First 2 now sitting in the American Muscle Car Museum in Florida.

Supposedly sold from Ohio in the very very early 70's.

Great find - I think Doug would say - "never say never" when it comes to finding a Super Car!

I have a 68 MV Block (396ci / 375hp) that might be to your car. These engine were used in 68 Camaro cars destined to be converted by Yenko.

I love when pics are posted that reveals history.

JoeC 05-23-2022 10:20 AM

congratulations on a great find

the body number is 4 units away from another Yenko COPO 9737

Does it have the original MV code 396 engine?

Does it have the large front sway bar?

Any signs of a Yenko YS door jam tag or Yenko crest emblem on the tail panel?

Copo_Cartel 05-23-2022 11:00 AM

Your speedometer is worth it’s weight in gold I’ve seen some guys in the past ask more than $5000 for those. Congratulations on your find. Converted or nonconverted they were always cool cars and there are several people on this site that are well-versed and will be able to help you in your quest for knowledge.

cook_dw 05-23-2022 12:17 PM

Very cool congrats.

Mr70 05-23-2022 03:07 PM

Awesome find, did the seller you bought it from know it was a Yenko?..have you tried to find the 2 previous owners too?

Stefano 05-23-2022 03:13 PM

Awesome, congrats to you on your find. Great car to share at MCACN in hidden Gems and Barnfinds!

Hi Joe,
It has a 69 dated engine with a CE stamp currently in it. It does have the large front sway bar.

Mr Yenko 05-27-2022 10:02 PM

Congrats on a awesome find !! That sway bar is priceless. I hope you bring the car back to its former glory !

Unreal 05-31-2022 03:38 PM

I love the story of the unconverted L78's. I remember the story of the one that was dealer traded to, I think, Kenny Ross. To everyone, it was just a leftover L78. I think I'd rather have one of those, than a converted Yenko.

Hope you make a ton$ Dan.GLWS!

AggieDan03 06-09-2022 02:44 AM

Hey Anthony.
Yes, I did recently purchase the car. However, I’m not a car flipper by any means. I have my own collection of cars that are geared more towards pro-touring. With that being said I’m still unsure of what I want to do with this car. Whether that be restore it, preserve it or sell it. I decided to offer it on the open market for 10 days. If it sells it sells. If not I will keep it. I’m just not sure if I’m the right guy for the car once it’s restored.
Regards,
Dan

AnthonyS 06-09-2022 03:07 AM

Certainly no explanation owed to me Dan.

I had a low mile 1969 Camaro barn find SS396 and I turned out not to have the best home for it, so I understand your point. Although it took me about eight years to realize that. Hah.

Cheers,
Anthony

AggieDan03 06-09-2022 03:58 AM

Hey Anthony,
No worries at all. I don’t blame you though for hanging on to that 69 for a while!
We’ll see what happens. I may put the car back together as is and sort of make a “Day 2” survivor out of it. We’ll see…
Thanks
Dan

Kurt S 06-09-2022 04:24 AM

What's the stamped axle code, BUxxxx? Thx!

AggieDan03 06-09-2022 04:33 AM

Hey Kurt,
I’ll check in the morning and will send you some pics.
Thanks
Dan

What a neat car! Is there a known number of 9737 car ordered? Was yenko the only one that ordered them? This seems like a pretty unique car!
