Trim tag replacement

I would like opinions on a trim tag dilemma. My friend who is elderly has a survivor 1974 Z28 that hes owned since the 80's. The trim tag is damaged from a mouse nest ( nothing else, just the thin metal tag) against my advice he removed the tag thinking he would clean it up and paint it. My question is, would you put it back on with new rivets or replace the tag. The tag info is totally fine, can a 100% correct tag even be purchased? Where can the correct rivets be bought if available? Thanks ahead of time for your knowledge

If I remember correctly, the 74s have a trim tag that is attached with screws, not rivets.

Hope he kept the screws then, when he sent me a picture holding the tag i assumed it was riveted, screws would be best case scenario

Yep they are held on with screws

Screws started in about April of 73.

That's good, i thought for sure he made a big mistake.

Can a correct tag be made off the original? I know Kevin Marti does Ford

Post a picture.

Personally. I would just put it back on rather than to use a fake....Joe

It's just the corners, not sure why

drce500 02-09-2022 05:33 PM

Yeah think its best just put it back on, i see the original getting lost

Put the original back on; damaged or not.

Once a tag is ID'd as a fake, the whole car is called into question.

Man mouse ate the tag? Must have some tuff mice there!! Lol

drce500 02-09-2022 07:41 PM

The edges are rusted, he thinks maybe a mouse nest on it? I'm just going off his opinion, car is rust free otherwise

drce500 02-09-2022 07:42 PM

I only thought of new tag because i thought he cut original rivets off. Now that i know its screwed on i wish i would never have mentioned it to him

The other problem replacing a TT is the car gets scrutinized more and validity called into question.

drce500 02-09-2022 07:44 PM

Or brought the subject up,lol

It's not a big deal he disturbed the tag. Just clean it up and screw it back on. Don't use any abrasive cleaning techniques.
You guys are just used to chasing earlier rare cars easily faked with a trim tag swap.
It's a 1974 and will never be confused as a hi horse model. The engine is coded in the VIN.

Yes as was said before 74 is a screw mounted tag year. If he lost those two special screws, all is not lost: they are actually the same screws that were used to attach the rear filler panel that goes between the trunk lid and the rear window, to the car.
