1970 LS6 block stamping, does this stamp look good. The number is 6 before the 45, flash reflection, sorry about the picture quality. Thanks.

No pro here, but 1st impressions: Don’t like the broach marks (or lack there of). And the partial VIN font size is too big. And partial VIN should be up right with Tonowanda stamp - both upside right - both readable from front of engine.

I’ve seen legitimate factory stamps upside down.

The vin number should be a smaller font. All the vin stampings I have seen on different cars were a smaller font than the engine stamp.

KC cars are stamped upside down and used a larger font in '70. I'm not sure about the lack of broach marks though.

Actually, Kansas stamps are completely different than the other plants and are stamped upside down and are bigger than the other plants. They have very unique 6's and 9's that are easily spotted. I too have issues with the lack of broach marks and it would be nice to see the rest of the deck area that was not exposed to see if they are there. I have this car in my registry but have never laid hands on it. The VIN stamp matches my other samples but still checking to see if I have a similar Tonawanda stamp.

Assuming the flash has washed out the broach marks, and they really are there,I like it George.
Everything lines up with originals I have seen in this series.

I think the block was sand blasted to clean off rust, from what I was told, Would that make the broach marks look non-existent ??
Here is another example of a 1970 block with the same size font. Hard to see broach marks on this one also

Check with Oliver P of Canada. He used to own this car and may be able to enlighten you on its history.

Hi Rick, I did talk to Oliver in the fall, he said he never owned the car. I did see some GM paperwork with Olivers name on it. Apparently John H gave the owner of the car the paperwork quite some time ago. A friend has owned the car for 20 years.
Is Oliver on this site?

SS427 05-05-2020 02:26 AM

Sorry. I have it in my files that Oliver owned the car at one time. I think he does visit here from time to time.

I was looking at the examples provided by Mr 70. Was the block stamped before the head was applied?

Yes.

Its been said before but especially now that the forum is setup to give a full preview of all the photos in a thread but it probably isn't wise to post up good known stamps as well as info about said stamps. But do what you want.:dunno:

ls6owner 05-06-2020 06:06 AM

Good evening everyone. I just ran across this thread. I have never owned that car but I do have GM of Canada paperwork on it. I do recall someone asking me about whether I owned it or not but don't remember who asked and didn't remember that I had paperwork on it. Getting forgetful, I guess! It was originally sold at Ted Brooks Chevrolet in Calgary. I went through my old notes from the mid nineties and have a couple names that might help the owner. PM me if someone wants to chat. Thx Oliver
