Cleaning floor boards

Spent some time cleaning the undercoating off the floor boards of the 69 L78 conv today.

absolutely killer floors.

What did you use?

Its amazing how the under coating protected them. I used a heat gun with a plastic scrapper and them wiped them down with solvent from my solvent tank.

Real nice job John.

FWIW on floors chassis etc which have been subjected to open headers and soot, carbon caked on, I have used Wal Mart / dollar store HD oven cleaner with great results, FWIW the non smelly stuff isn't worth the time or effort.
The fuel tank was ridiculously covered in carbon from open headers.
The axle housing had 1/8-3/16" thick carbon flaking off when we got the car....

Thats good to know. I found heatimg the first layer with a propane torch goes much quicker, then use a heat gun comes right off.
Looks like the floor brace is K22 and the car is 11D seems like body parts were made right before the body was assembled.
Thats it I am done scrapping leave the rest for the next owner. The driver front floor has a little rust not bad for it being a PA car most its life

You asking about the conv brace Tom?

ssl78 03-10-2020 05:05 AM

Looks really nice John. I did the same on my Chevelle a few years ago. Spent months of evenings on my back using kerosene, plastic scrappers and paint brushes to remove the undercoating. You're right; that stuff does preserve the underbodies pretty well.
Might I suggest you give it all a good shot of Boeshield when you're done? After ten-plus years mine still looks fine.

ssl78 03-10-2020 06:57 PM

Thanks Dennis, It is nice having a lift to do this. I do remember the days of laying on my back scraping. I couldnt do that anymore. I will have to get some boeshield good idea.

Boeshield is good. Look into fluid film and wool wax as well
