There used to be a place up on Woodward, Tiny Tim’s. They had race tracks set up. You go there sat morn and have a blast. You would rent by the hour.
I had a small tool box with all the stuff, you’d take that along. Only thing I have left is the Ford GT 500, just the plastic car covering, no frame or motor.p

We actually bought one of those 4-track setups (the smaller regular AFX sized - HO?) for my son's race-car themed party when he was four. I expected it to be a huge hit with the kids, but most of them just wanted to jump on the trampoline. Kids these days, sheesh.

RPOLS3 01-24-2020 12:46 PM

Hey Rick is there still a slot car track in the basement of the Bowling Alley on Ogden Ave. in Westmont? Went there probably 10 years ago for a kids birthday party.

Mr70 01-24-2020 12:47 PM

Gone.. :(

Burd 01-24-2020 02:25 PM

I think I’ll get this one.

Slot cars are so cool.

If I lived in Dallas, I would probably go buy this set up, since I can't work on real cars for a while:

For when the ad is gone, here is a pic:

Thinking this would be fun recreation with my grandsons.

I found one just like it on ebay, but priced higher. Seller will agree to ship.

Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal?

markinnaples 02-01-2020 03:39 PM

FWIW, my wife bought one for our son's birthday a few years ago just like the picture above, and she spent about $225. Not sure if the prices have changed much, but that was about the going rate for the 4 car setup.

Burd 02-01-2020 05:16 PM

That is cool.

Western Suburbs of Chicago had several slot car tracks, but they rarely last more than 6 months. There was actually one that lasted several years and held the national slot car championship. It was a nice place, they had 3 layouts, and always seemed to have a decent crowd. Unfortunately, they closed too, despite trying to appeal to families and entertaining birthday parties. With the advent of the iPhone, young kids have absolutely zero interest in slot cars. It's too much work when your car de-slots and you have to get up and walk around the track to put the car back on course. There's no app for that. I guess if someone developed an app like Uber or Lyft, where for $1 per use someone could put your slot car back in the groove for you, they'd get into slot cars.

There's a newer slot car track in Naperville, not sure how long it will last. The owner managed to get into a strip mall that's nearly dead (used to the #1 mall in the suburbs). A Costco is scheduled to move into that mall now (replacing a vacant K-Mart) so perhaps that will revive the mall.

Here's one of the longest layouts I've ever seen!

Mr70 02-01-2020 05:51 PM

Mid America Raceway used to be here by me in Downers Grove on Woodward & 63rd,then he moved down south.
Good to see him back here in Naperville off Ogden today.

We used to have a place in Ottawa IL. that had two tracks and a drag strip. It was open for many years.

Very impressive..

TimG 02-09-2020 05:16 PM

There was a good slot car track on Milwaukee and Devon on the north side of Chicago right by Super Dawg. It was there in the 60's. I had a good size track in our basement that kept me occupied on those cold winter days. The guys and I would spend hours down there.

Is there any way to slow those babies down?

Burd 02-10-2020 01:49 PM

Wow. I remember getting these expensive foam tires, I saved for weeks. Lol. They helped a lot to stay on the track.
