Delco Y89 Battery, NOS, Perfect
I have had this stored away for some time, and never did anything with it as I had intended (was going to be a show battery for my '69 Z but I sold that in 2008). I see another NOS battery for sale on Ebay for $799, and it's been there for some time, so how about $375 plus the ride for this perfect one.
Believe this is correct for late production '69 Z/28 and Super Sport Chevelle, and into the '70 model year, and possibly others. Thanks sYc! |
Sent you a PM Tony.

I would also be interested if its still available and since you had a late 69 z2, and chance on a positive side battery cable side post 6297684 AS?
|
Didn't the late 69Z use a Y77?
Doc. |
It did use the Y77. The Y89 is what I believe to be one of the replacements for the Y77 and may have been a production line battery for later/different models? The Y77 had two different size terminals. The Y89 is a standard 3/8-16 terminal size battery. The negative battery cable or bolt had to be changed when the Y77 was no longer available. I think the Y89 came out around 1974? The Y77 was a one year only battery. Very rare.

also believe the Y87 was another replacement for the Y77. Again uses both 3/8 terminals.

Seems to me that the Y87 was a different physical size battery but I may be wrong on that.

I believe the Y55 was replaced with Y77 later in the year. Also R59 was replaced by the R79 later in the year.

Delco Dimensional Group Sizes: The Y-77 and Y-87 were Group 72 where as the Y-79 and Y-89 were Group 74. See chart for all battery specs...

awesome.
|
1969-70 Super Sport Chevelle would've come with the standard top post R59.
|
Looking at that chart, The Y77 and Y87 are almost Identical other than the Y77 having one smaller bolt thread on one terminal !
|
Yep 3/8" & 5/16" terminal bolts were intended to prevent cross cabling. You needed to have 2 different size wrenches on hand, but was inconvenient,so many just used pliers/channel locks or Vise grips to turn those suckers and strip their heads. That's why the optional 1970 R79, that had em also, went away in favor of the newly designed R89 in 1971,which didn't.

I have pics available to those interested.

The Feb built '70 SS 454 car I bought in '73 had 2 different size hex head bolts on the side terminals. So that car would have come with the optional battery ? Had a huge tray too. I bought a new design, high output 1,000 amp battery from Sears in about '79 that was 12" long and it fit the tray. Too bad the batteries became famous for exploding as mine did...:eek2: |

It was an extra cost option on the other engines. |
Now $350, way less than I have into it, free delivery to MCACN.
|
FYI - sent a PM about the battery.
