Handsome devil! 4spd/bench!!!!!!!!!!

carnut4life 08-23-2019 11:02 PM

Twice as rare and half the price of an LS6, I love it!

Crush 08-23-2019 11:08 PM

Hundred bucks down, wow!!
Love the car, wish I had room.

carnut4life 08-24-2019 06:18 PM

I really like this car so I had to try tracking down the original owner, he's still alive and well in Rolla, Mo and has owned the car twice, very nice guy. Said he replaced the cam, lifters and retainers in 1971 which I figure probably saved the original block since they were so prone to dropping valves when new. I wish I had the space and money for this car.

GM-26 08-24-2019 06:38 PM

It's perfect!

luzl78 08-24-2019 08:58 PM

Rich, is the white mustang convertible a 390 car?

MYSTERYCHEVELLE 08-25-2019 01:17 PM

L-78's bring more money than "396's" it's all about having an L in the description ;)

Good Luck with your sale. Just takes one who has to have it!
Mike

Nice car.
I inspected this car thoroughly back in 2012 when it had 69,819 miles on it.

Always wondered, was the L78 and LS6 available at the same time.?

Mr70 08-30-2019 02:08 PM

No,they cancelled the L-78 early on as Chevrolet didn't want two solid lifter engines in their line up,as well as they wanted to hype the new 454's.
But there was a very slight overlap between the two.

Pusher_Man 09-01-2019 03:11 AM

I think I’ve even seen documented where someone ordered an L78 and they were sent an LS6 instead...nice upgrade :)

Oh, and there was one we knew of that that happened and it was so early in the changeover process that it came with an LS6 (or LS5 if the hydraulic lower hp option was ordered, but I think it was the L78 ordered) but had 396 emblems : )

How cools is that!? And yes, there were docs showing where the dealer swapped out the emblems to 454 to actually fix the mistake.

Good ol' Rolla, Missouri! Very nicely optioned '70 with the Wide-Ratio M20 & a 4.10 rear screw . . . this is a fun car to drive, just make sure it's pointed straight!

Maybe old news to you 'Velle guys but I'd love to hear more about these circumstances, especially of factory 454 cars shipped w/ 396 emblems.
:beers:

Very nice L78 !!
Is that the Assembly line Transmission? I have never seen a gang stamp spread out and un even like that before on a Kansas Leeds car for a 1970 Chevelle. They are usually a straight gang stamp that matches the blocks numbered fonts.

Showing is an example photographed on the last Kansas Leeds Trans I inspected that matched the stamp on the block. (Last 3 numbers scribbled for customers privacy).

Richls5 06-02-2021 08:06 PM

prolly long shot but did this ever sell?

carnut4life 06-02-2021 09:04 PM

Yeah, I broke down and asked about it and January and he said it was already sold. Still kicking myself over that one too.
