"custom Caprice equipment"? Is this really how RPO Z16 was listed on Chevelle window stickers?

I actually think there is a chance that it's a real window sticker. It looks like other original typed stickers I've seen, has the company car stamp and Caprice Custom Equipment was Z18. If whomever typed it happened to lose track of the line where they were typing the info from, they may have typed reading the line below Z16. I'll have to do some comparing. It also has the right ECL code for tinted glass.

Why would a legitimate sticker from the factory have been typed on a typewriter? Obviously the other three examples from 1965 Chevelles posted above were all computer generated. :hmmm:

Not sure, just asking. IBM 360 series were standard of the industry in late 60’s-70’s. Not sure they were on the market in 65, but maybe there was something else.

Hard to imagine every invoice was hand typed either.

Most were not hand typed but some definitely were. Usually if it was a company car and they retyped it to show the dealer it was being sold through. The font matches other typed stickers I have seem including one from a 65 Impala SS. Maybe these were a typed at the zone office instead of the plant. Who knows. But they definitely hand typed some of them. It has that company use stamp on it, which ive never seen a repro have. Not many people even know about that part. I actually saw a hand typed sticker from a 68 caprice a few months ago.

If we mean original as far as the window sticker being generated at the plant, than no, this was not generated from the plant. However, we do see window stickers that are typed up at the dealership. This looks to be the case. The form is correct and does have the perfs on all sides. Looks to be a Brass Hat car, we have original samples of the same stamp for cars used at the dealership. Too many of the ECL codes look to be correct for it to be a repro. The car is an April produced car so it was ordered prior. All the pricing reflects the price changes of June 1965, so these prices would not have been the original prices for the car. Again, I'm guessing it was used at the dealership and when it came time to sell it they typed up the window sticker based on the current pricing at that time and perhaps had a damaged window sticker or car shipper to use as reference for the RPO's and ECL codes.

That is very interesting. This car was the Popular Hotrodding test car on loan from Covina Chevrolet in 65. This window sticker came with when Dennis purchased the car a few years ago.

The IBM System 360 (model 30) was announced on April 7, 1964. Shipments started at the end of 64/beginning of 1965.

Printers
 

The printers that were used to print the window stickers and other documents were the IBM 1401, 1460 and finally the IBM 1403. We built our font program from original samples of the IBM 1403 which was used for many years at all GM plants.

I'm sure there were a few unusual situations where a sticker needed to be reproduced at the dealer or zone level, and then it undoubtedly would have been hand typed. But on a car this rare (65 Z16) I personally would need to see and/or know more than a typed window sticker as proof of legitimacy.

The car is well documented, with owner history and certification letters. Well known car in the Z16 world. Just curious about the window sticker.

yup thats was how the Z16 package was listed. We we had ours, the sticker reflected it this was.

That is a dealer typed window sticker for a car being sold as a previous demo car. Every line item price on it is reduced pro rata from the original amount, I would assume based on the mileage the car had on it when it was eventually sold.

The Z16 option is not listed that way on the factory generated window stickers, but this particular dealership listed it that way as "shorthand" -- rather than typing out the 14 lines that the Z16 option description contains on a factory Z16 window sticker.
