Is this a newly found car? The ad says it is a one owner car. The price is a couple hundred high. :D

172 MPH at Daytona? I have a hard time believing that. Who puts 68,257 miles on a car and doesn't remove the window sticker?

I've heard a story about one of these sitting behind a house in Quality KY. Don't know if it's true or not.

I have seen one or two cars before where people, for God-knows-what reason, have not removed the window sticker.

Cliff's a legend - look him up. How many teenagers managed to get through the back door at Chevrolet and get cozy enough with Piggins, Zora and Ed Cole to score a Z16 and then an L88 Corvette to race with under the table factory backing? Exactly one: Cliff. His life is the stuff of movies.

Anyone that hasn't read the story about Cliff building the L88 Corvette and driving it from Kansas to Daytona and back needs to look it up, absolutely amazing story!

----This Z16 was, I'm pretty sure, given to Cliff to evaluate and evaluate it he did. I'm not sure weather he installed the tall gears or weather GM installedthem for him to do the top end run!.......Bill S

That's also always been my thought as well. As far as the MPH claim, I kind of doubt it. Even with that gear, and a 26" tire, it would require you to spin about 7400 rpm to reach that speed. Quite a feat for a stock hydraulic cam.

Problem with that is not only the engine appearing to be stock in the photo's complete with exhaust manifolds, I doubt the engine would make enough HP to overcome the aerodynamic challenges involved to reach a speed like that.

Unless we aren't getting the whole story?

Neat car though.

I know what my 69 turns with an M21 and 3.31 gears at 72 mph. I know it's not a Z16, but 172? Ha. Not without some mods like has been mentioned.

A friend of mine had one of these cars and he took me for a ride. He had 3:08 gears in the car. He said "you know, these can peg the speedometer! I said really! He said that the speedometer starts bouncing pretty bad at about 130, but with a 27 inch tire and the 3:08 gears you watch the tachometer. When it hits 6100 rpm you are pretty close. Then he looked at me, smiled and dumped the clutch. The speedometer was pegged and so was the tach. I don't know if we were doing 160 or not but I'll bet we were pretty darn close. All of this on bias ply tires!

That story about Cliff Gotlobb was awesome. Wow, what a talented individual he must be/have been to have Chevrolet pull him in and take his ideas into production. Really cool.

You might be surprised how high you can wind an engine when the hydraulics are adjusted to where the travel is maxed out. I used to adjust my old stocker with a .003 feeler gauge, as per Lunaiti instructions.

Yeah I have an L-79 I did that with, and would spin close to 7,000 without issues, but it didn't make much power up there.

But that's a different deal, SBC has much lighter valve train in it. Plus the fact that these L78's don't make power way up at 7400, the cam is long done before that. Aside from that, a stock L78 complete with exhaust manifolds would fall short on HP needed to push a brick to that speed. Just my thoughts.

Neat story though. Some of these cars always seem to be associated with tall stories. Makes them interesting for sure.

The story says that this car still has the 3.31 gears, and the engine looks completely stock, so I don't think there is enough power to push it to 172 MPH. That would be 7360 RPMs with a 26 inch tire. I may be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time, for sure. Anyway, it's a pretty awesome car and I'd love to have it.

Outside of the Owens-Corning '68, I believe it is the "winning-est" L88 Corvette of them all.

That is correct. No optional rear ratio too
