1987 SS Monte Carlo 3000 miles,with a twist

I purchased this car about six months ago, It was purchased new from Jay's Village Chevrolet in Fayettville New York. It was ordered without AC but had PS,PW, and bucket seats. It now has just over 3000 miles on it. With just 5 miles on the clock the engine, trans and rear were pulled in favor of an aluminum head 427, turbo 400 and a Currie 9 inch Ford rear, I know its not a Super car but sure has an interesting story. The only thing I have done is add a set of 2" drop spindles, lowering springs on the rear, and a set of RC Comp wheels to set it off a bit. I's been a fun car so far and of course the story is as much fun as the car.

I Like It..

Neat. How about some under hood pics?

flyingn 01-19-2018 10:50 AM

The MCSS was not available without Air conditioning

The Boss 01-19-2018 10:59 AM

Frank, I believe it was included in all of the option packages but there was a delete code for it. Same goes for the radio.

Cool car, we'll need some more pics.

Great looking car. Just wondering, when you lowered it did you reset the pinion angle and check the drive shaft length? Lowering these cars can change the pinion angle quite a bit, and the 9 inch has such a low pinion that changing the pinion angle really affects the drive shaft length.

lowmile 01-19-2018 02:36 PM

It didn't have quiet enough angle initially and it wound up about 4.5 degrees down when finished, it's a touch much but not bad enough to cause me to change it. It had a custom drive shaft and it did not cause any length issues lowering it.

I don't think so.. Im pretty sure its a mandatory option, like power steering and brakes

flyingn 01-19-2018 04:27 PM

from the pictures, it looks like someone converted it to a non AC car. Its done quite often. I want to see the build sheet of the window sticker.. If you have proof I admit defeat. :)

JpMotorsports 01-19-2018 05:11 PM

My first car was a 87 SS with the same body color and interior. I miss that car so much!

Arrowsmith 01-19-2018 05:40 PM

I sold those cars new. AC (C60) was definitely an option and not part of the SS package. And hey, if someone wants an almost new, loaded pristine example, I have a maroon one for sale!

flyingn 01-19-2018 06:46 PM

Gotta be rare as heck..

combinefixer 01-19-2018 06:57 PM

I bet that G body hauls the fuggin mail! :burnout::burnout::3gears:

GM Powertrain 01-19-2018 08:23 PM

I've seen various year G body Monte SS cars without AC.

Jonesy 01-19-2018 09:17 PM

I have never seen an 87 SS without air cond. Thats rare for sure. I ordered mine loaded up.

Here you go Frank No C60 code. I was skeptical at first, I had never seen one with out air either.

lowmile 01-20-2018 01:26 AM

I tracked down the original owner/builder yesterday. Great guy, sent him a few current pics of the car and he shared a few details, cars are fun but the stories and the people make them special.

"Thank you very much for the photo's it was a real trip down memory lane.
I drove that car from the dealership about 3 miles away before we took it
apart and put it back together. I had all the drive train and motor done
before the car came in. I built a motor test stand that you could roll around
with a fuel tank, radiator, battery, gauges etc. Bolt the motor up, run it in
a little, check for leaks, re-torque the heads do the valves etc. That way there
were no surprises when we put it in the car. I also remember that we had to do some
work with the heater core box for valve cover clearance.
I also think now we may have done some work with the shift indicator, I know I was
Really trying to keep the car as stock looking as possible.
I showed the photos to a my good friend, he and I were always building something
together so he was really happy to see them too.
If you ever get a video of the old girl going down the track we would love to see it."

C41 is the Heater only/non A/C RPO code - same as on Camaro & Firebird of that generation. $805 savings off the sticker on my 91 1LE Formula.

Totally agree! So can you share the wheel and tire sizes with us (R&D purposes...,L-O-L).

lowmile 01-23-2018 01:55 AM

The wheels are RC Comp, Fronts are 17x4.5 with 185/55R17 M&H DOT Radial, 2 inch drop spindles
The rears are 15x8 with a 4 inch back spacing and 255/60/15 M/T's even with a 2 1/2 drop no clearance issues/rubbing anywhere. And yes I spent entirely too much time, money and thought into a stance I could live with. I'm sure I could take medication for what ever causes me to be this way, but then what would I do with all of my spare time and money. Wayne, not feeling the urge to dive into yours ?????? :D

Your car is definitely an inspiration! I have a few irons in the fire with mine (involving trades) and if they don't work out, I'll dig into it.
