Muscle Car Review
Just received my latest issue and wanna give a big CONGRATULATIONS to Mike Angelo. A real nice article about Mike and his Black 375 horse '69 Camaro. Way to go Mike! Love the Cragars!
I knew Black was rare, but didn't know it was only 2% of the total build that wore that color out of the assembly plant. The car really pops with the red hockey stick! |
Just an OBTW . . .
One of the rarest colors for the 1969 Camaro is Butternut Yellow with just 0.8% http://s7.postimg.org/8for2mv97/aws.jpg |
According to CRG, Buternut yellow was 1 %' and champagne was .5 %

Muscle Car Review
Chevrolet Marketing information concerning paint color options for the 1969 Camaro is confusing.
Black was discontinued during the 1968 model year. However the initial release of the 1969 Camaro Showroom Album lists 18 colors with black at the top of the list. Several colors are flagged "check availability before ordering": 10, 40, 51, 61, 63 and 67. A later rev sheet for the album removes the flags from 51, 61 and 67. There was also a document that designated certain colors as “Special Order” by assembly plant. For Van Nuys those were 10, 40, 51, 61, 67; two tones 53-51, 51-53, 61-63. For Norwood those were 40, 63; two-tone 61-63. What “Special Order” meant wasn’t clear. The first rev of the 1969 Camaro Dealer Order Form is dated 6-68. Colors are not listed but there was a place to specify color. Dealers could start placing orders July 1, 1968; at that time black appeared to be an RPO color. Sometime later rev 0 of the US showroom brochure was released. Black [10], Butternut Yellow [40] and Champagne [63] are not listed. They are also not listed in rev 1. The Canadian rev doesn't list colors. 10, 40, 63 are also not listed in the dealer ordering data. But they were available. In checking the CRG db, from the start of production through the end of 1968 at both plants there are a very few of those colors. They are not designated as special paint. After January 1969 they become far more common. Black, Champagne and Butternut Yellow were extra-cost: $12.65. At some point late in 1968 Chevy must have notified dealers that 10, 40, 63 would be available at extra cost. It is not known how earlier orders were handled. |
Congrats Mike! Great spread..............................I want those slicks!

I have a friend that had a 69 almost identical to Mike's and it was ordered in the fall of 1968 and it had a -- pnt tag and he was able to get a copy of the dealer's invoice and it showed it as special paint and I believe that the cost was about $35.00.

Not to deviate from the thread about Mike, but since odd colors are being discussed, there is/was a Butternut Z/28 offered on eBay recently. I passed on a Butternut convertible a few months ago, mainly because of the Butternut Yellow; it is just so bland. I can see why not many models in that color. Also, pertaining to rare colors, my '69 Camaro started life as a 53 50 Two Tone Dover White/Glacier Blue X22. And, way back as a teenager, my first '69 Camaro was Azure Turquoise with a black top/interior/hockey stick.

While I do love the Black and Blue cars, that right there has to be one of my favorite colors on a 69 car. Super clean car!!! |
Great article!
BTW. Palomino Ivory was a pretty rare color in 1968. I believe .6% of Camaros had that color. |
Great looking car

Cool car guy story

So several weeks ago and after the article on the Black car was out a fellow 69 and 70 Camaro owner in Fairborn Ohio reaches out by phone to talk about my car after finding out it came from Lang's Chevrolet in Fairborn.
After a nice talk he had a later style black plastic license plate frame he wanted to send me and I graciously accepted. I also ask him if Lang's ever used a metal plate frame . He also mentioned he knew twin brothers that were salesman at Lang's back in 1969. After our initial conversation he reached out to one of the brothers and ask about the frame, and he said, I just might have one of those. And now you know the rest of the story, and how a never before mounted, totally mint metal license plate frame from Lang's found it's way to Black Beauty, and at no charge !! He did not even want $ for the postage. I did send him one of my restored gas caps and hope it goes to one of his Camaros. And FYI there is no makers mark on the back casting. So how cool is this.... That's some good karma right there Mike!! Looks great, Day two 1969!!!

Superb!!! Lovin' it!!!! Well deserved Mikey!
P.S. can you run that "in transit" plate legally in OH? I have some mint dealer plates that I would like to use but figured DMV would not allow them. |

I have one on the Camaro and one on the Malibu, both registered. I also see many dealer plates out there. The second one I registered was on the Camaro, the deputy registrar I always go to would not register it, he even called Columbus and talked to some gurl and she said you could not register dealer plates....:bs:...so he was scared and declined doing it, so I told him no problem, I'll go to another, and the other one 3 miles away did not even question it. So, I have never gotten a straight question, or a Ohio code saying you could not do it. I would try it , may need several attempts ? Mike |

Ryan PS: In Ontario we can register YOM year of manufacture plates:-) for the low prices of $$$261.55 CAD |
Sam, there is nothing in the Ohio Revised Code under section 4503.181 that excludes a person from registering model year dealer plates. Below is subsection "D" of this ordinance which talks specifically about registering historical and model year plates. You also do NOT need to run both plates on the car. With model year plates you only have to display the rear unlike regular Ohio plates, must display both. Below it says both plates "MAY" not "MUST" be displayed.
(D) A vehicle registered under this section may display either a historical vehicle license plate issued by the registrar of motor vehicles or a model year license plate procured by the applicant. A historical vehicle license plate shall not bear a date, but shall bear the inscription "Historical Vehicle--Ohio" and the registration number, which shall be shown thereon. A model year license plate shall be a legible and serviceable license plate issued by this state and inscribed with the date of the year corresponding to the model year when the vehicle was manufactured. Two model year license plates, duplicates of each other, may be displayed on the historical motor vehicle at any time, one plate on the front and one plate on the rear of the vehicle. The registration certificate and the historical vehicle license plate issued by the registrar shall be kept in the vehicle at all times the vehicle is operated on the public roads and highways in this state. Hope this helps.... Rich |
Mike, that plate frame is bad A$$!!!!
