Nova plastic plugs for center studs on hood front moldins
 

Does anyone make exact factory plastic plugs for the back center studs for the front hood lip molding on a 1970 Nova.I am missing the two plugs Thanks Bob

Perhaps, but I've not seen them - yet! We pull them from junk yard cars, even the split ones (which most are) and we RTV them back together.

Google part number 4770719 plastic plug and a e-bay ad will come up. Did this last year. If i remember, they were sold as a set of 10, so you will have extra's. Be careful installing them, for they will split like the originals did. They are very close to the originals.

They almost look like the plastic insert which the door panel clips push into.

I have a pair of original's in pretty good shape.

When I restored Grady's 69 Nova around 2008 those plastic thread covers came in one of the AMK kits. I tried to find them loose in there PDF parts list with no luck :dunno:

The plastic caps look good, but the hood molding.... We will have to find you another one!!

That's what they are!! I'm sure the originals were used for the same purpose...

The door panel clips are a different shape & brown, and thus not interchangeable.

I looked at these plastic caps and didn't seem to remember anything like these on my 1970 Nova with an April build date. Since I am the third owner of the car I can't certainly say the treatment on my car is factory, but I can say that the car has never been hit here, so now I'm wondering if this may actually be factory.

The "cap" is some kind of formed putty material that has hardened over the years and is now very brittle, only putty remnants on some of the hood lip pins.

Any thoughts? Some kind of factory application, or, some home mechanics bright idea in place of lost/missing plastic caps?

My December 69 built 70 Nova does not have any putty or remnants of putty however the car was repainted some 20 years ago.Bob

Diamond, are you showing under the hood where the hood emblem goes? Not sure what you are showing us.

I call it the hood lip molding, it's part number 6263110, and goes across the entire front edge of the hood. I tried to take a backside picture of this molding's fasteners with the hood up.

There is no evidence of the putty material on the hood's bow tie emblem (the center one with two attachment studs).

I've never seen any putty on any of the hood lip molding studs.

Note that the NOS hood lip molding you have is different than the factory installed versions, in two areas;

1. The studs are self threaded whereas the assy line versions were machine thread.

2. There are 2 studs missing in the NOS versions, closest to the center emblem - you can see the holes for them in the earlier pic. The assy line versions would have 2 additional studs compared to the NOS one in this pic.

You can still find early NOS hood lip moldings with all studs in machine thread, but they are difficult to find. The other option is to remove the self threading studs on the later NOS versions and replace the studs with a machine threaded stud, then add two more while it's apart...

Thanks for the info Marlin. I can see the differences with the attachment studs that you are pointing out.

In the early 80's I bought as much NOS Nova trim that was available through my GM dealer (in Canada), for a future restore. I haven't put anything on the car yet since I figured the time to do it would be when the body work and paint got done.

I'll do my best to make sure that no factory original trim gets destroyed or thrown out when my NOS trim goes on!
