Look closely at that rear panel. No shine. Looks flat black to me. |

Chevrolet built about 36,000 67-69 396 Camaros. Maybe each of us has personally seen 100 of them. There are several excellent original paint examples still around with very glossy rear body panels. Also, some with satin rear body panels. Appears either was acceptable. |
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Have to agree with that statement.
A car hand prepped for a national seen show by the styling Dept, was not really what the assembly line actually spit out for Main St. USA. Many variations were possible. |

Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Well -- IMHO they could do without the hideaway mechanism ... just leave em' out there for all to see ...

Taken at the Detroit Auto Show in January 1967. Here is the front of the car. Gotta love the pure factory look the car has right down to the slight misalignment of the headlight door to grille.

A very plausible explanation was provided on page 4 at post #639458. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...opics/639185/1 |

My '67 convert had the parchment custom interior; sun visors were black. |
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
My visors are also black

Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Notice the 68 Camaro script on the front plate.....pretty neat.

Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Agreed; that does explain it. I don't know beans about paint. We did a rotisserie resto on a '67 Z/28 many years ago; the painter has been doing this stuff forever. He mixed up some black lacquer with flattener for the undercarriage and firewall, sprayed away. Was during the Summer months. Dried nearly full gloss and really looked bad. Tried again with more flattener, knocked it down a bit but not where it should have been. Certainly wouldn't do it that way today.
If the current owner reads this he now understands... |

Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
I used to be in the flat black camp, but Charlie has just about convinced me that it wasn't. Evidence on mine suggested it was originally flat, but it hadn't been taken care of near as well as these. Mine will be painted like the original one posted in this thread, but not because I'm convinced it was like that originally. Here are a couple of survivors.
The first pic is mine. I'm still torn because it looked the same under the trunk seal that had never been removed. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/265/32...994fd510_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5632/3...80f372a1_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5612/3...f7d2ce3e_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5620/3...7e2f2a9c_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5555/3...5c84fa33_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5526/3...deaf4110_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5717/3...7b1fb1eb_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5666/3...6f1b934b_z.jpg |
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Looking at the original photo in this thread, it appears that the rally wheels are chrome plated. Look at the area with the slots that is normally silver on the rear wheel. It looks as reflective as the center cap and trim ring.

Disagree. |
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
I disagree also, they look painted.
|
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
Wheels look painted to me -- rear panel appears flat black ... TAZ
|
Re: Flat Black SS396 Rear Panel?
wheels look like they have more reflection in them than what a painted wheel could ever produce. Not sure why this would matter, production is painted.
