I assume you are going to use freight. In that case I would definitely build a crate.

UPS and FedEx will give you the best rate with a tracking number. Over insure the unit. Crate it well in wood. You'll be fine using either option. LTL Road option. Should not be heavy weight.

Over insuring with UPS is just a waste of money. You will need proof of sale amount before you can collect a penny.
An ebay sold auction will do but nothing hand written.

If you want it to get there in one piece I would not send it UPS

I got one from California by truck. Picked it up at the terminal. Guy made a cardboard box and filled it with packing. He took a piece of water line insulation and split it and taped it to the edges. Worked real well.

UPS freight lost a BE 12 bolt for 3 weeks about 5 years ago. It was strapped to a skid, wrapped well, labeled and they lost the UPS Bill of Lading with the pre-paid notation. They tried delivering it to the PO box noted on the skid rather than the freight terminal noted on the original Bill of Lading. UPS also made a new Bill of Lading after they lost the original and changed the billing to freight collect. UPS tried collecting the freight charges from me for months even though they had already been paid by the purchaser who arranged shipping. Don't use UPS freight.

Greyhound bus is another option. Probably the lowest price but wrap it well with bubble wrap before you put it back in the original box. The one big downside is they will only insure for $300. I have shipped fenders and hoods, even a quarter panel, with good luck so far.

LOL. Same story. UPS lost my BE rear end. A few tense moments. I also hade a hood show up damaged. Pack it well.

I read that Fastenal does shipping. You will have to deliver it to your local store and your friend will have to pick it up at his nearest Fastenal store.

The only real safe way to insure it gets there undamaged is to build a wooden box. I bought a hood from Jim @ Heartbeat years ago and it was delivered by truck freight in a plywood box. Go to Lowes and buy the cheaper flake board plywood 3/8"

Tim,
Yes, that was the BE I shipped to Rick for you. I'm just glad it showed up finally!
