Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

Not sure if I've watched it too many times on TV but I found the auction this year to have lost some of its sizzle? Several of the high rollers were missing, Hendrick, Hendricks, Staluppi and Pratte to name a few. Not many 7 figure car changing hands and not many huge charity transactions. No new VIN number 1 cars going for crazy money either! I also found the whole Bieber Ferrari auction a joke! Luckily he can sing and dance a bit better than he can talk up his car!
Any other opinions?

I noticed the same thing.. You have to admit it is very entertaining if nothing else.. Keeps me laughing at some of the stuff I see.. These commentators get on my nerves especially that Chris Jacobs & Steve Magnante..

I also like how EVERYTHING that Barrett Jackson is selling is the best of the best, one of one, low mileage, ALL original, original paint etc.... Geez how do they do it??

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

My favorite was that hideous 69 Camaro Z28 clone red in color with the a$$ end jacked way up. The finishing touch was the Auto Zone white bar code sticker that was left on the alternator.. Car sold for $40 grand...

Like I said very entertaining!!

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

They announced about all of them as why they weren't there, Hendricks was being inducted to hall of fame,Staluppi had his birthday party at home and Ron Pratte got out of cars in 2015 when he sold off his whole collection. As for Bieber, yeah he's clueless haha.

Just got back and it was amazing as usual. Hendricks buyer was there. They announced this was the most cars they ever had there. I was on stage when Steven Tyler, Beiber and Dale Jr. came on stage. There was plenty of sizzle.

What he said. I was there all day Tuesday and back Friday night. Great as always.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

I drove cars up on the block all week. Can't speak about the theatrics (actually saw none of it), but Hendricks was represented (good friend of mine) and, for the most part, the cars I drove were better than last year, with two exceptions. Quite a few exotics being offered. Still plenty of sizzle in my world.

Jerry M and Kevin M were very busy inspecting their various brands of vehicles. Busier than last year!

Some of the big collectors are finding other interests and selling off their cars.

Great seeing my yenko.net friends this week. Sorry I did not have lots of time to talk.

Thanks for your feedback. It has been several years since I've actually attended the show, so maybe I need to go experience it in person again?
Don't get me wrong they obviously had lots of nice cars there it just didn't seem to have the same excitement on televison as I saw when the Futureliner, Shelby Dragon Snake, Batmobile or the prototype Oldsmobile had when they sold.
I did see you on television Charley. I thought I might see you bidding on the 70 Hemi Cuda convertible?

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

I thought it was funny how many cars were "bid" up then lowered. One in particular was the General Motors Intimidator Monte Carlo. It went up to $50K, down to around $30K, down to $20K, up to $30K and sold at $25K. When the high bidder bid $25K the bid then went to $30K. They kept trying to get the guy to bid more then $30K. When he wouldn't bid any more they dropped it back to $25K and sold it to him.

I thought it a was Resto Mod fest, It seems the pristine muscelecar stuff goes to Mecum/Russo and Steele, all the pristine older exotic stuff seems to go to Gooding/R+M/Sothebys etc. A lot of January competition for the collector cars

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

I was at BJ all week selling my '69 Z28 with my brother and Mr. Boone. We had the best '69 Z28 there by a landslide with the most forthright presentation revealing all numbers and info good or bad. Original motor and diff. Not hit body on original sheet metal. Our car did $85k on the block. Very soft #. BJ told us it would do $120k. A LOS '69 Z28 factory RS car, OEM drivetrain car in hugger orange did $73k (smoking deal). A couple of big brake, fuelie Vettes ('60 and '61 I think) did $105k and $107k (I maybe wrong on the exact figures pardon) but again, smoking deals. Those were $150k cars last year. We saw a '57 fuelie with the original motor hammer to $77k. Another Vette was a factory red/red 300hp Convertible sold for $50k (not a smoking deal but a good value). It was nice to see the lesser quality (NOM, restamp, fake tags contingent) sell at a lower value but Reggie Jackson's junk box black RS with Z28 emblems sold for double its value $80k - reproduction cowl tag. George Lyons '69 Z28 with a cross ram and a undisclosed restamp motor did $70k. The Gas Monkey Garage Daytona yellow '69 Z with some metal issues but OEM drivetrain did about low $60ks (added hood and spoilers but an M22 car). A real nice driver Citrus green '70 Z OEM drivetrain car did like $38k before fees. Needed a smog system but it was a decent buy. The COPO Camaros cars were all over the place. Not one had the original motor - Yellow/white Show Your Auto car did $155k after commissions, HO COPO in the Saloon collection did $132k, Albaugh Collection car with a restamp BE rear from George Harris did $104k. Whats with 1970 Chevelle owners with late introduction colors calling them COPO Chevelles? I don't think 1 LS6 Chevelle broke $100k. Tom William's old L78 Nova with a Henderson restoration did $67k. No love for a real Nova. In summary, the more time you spend looking at these BJ cars, the more reproduction parts you see. I was not enamored with a single muscle car there. I LOVED a gold/white roof '57 Nomad (or 2 door wagon, don't know much about those cars) that if I had all the cars I wanted and needed to have it, I'd be all over it. Sold for $70k before commissions? In speaking with friends I consider market watch dogs, we agreed the market is continually correcting itself from years of abusive spending. Prices down about 20% from expectation at BJ. I cannot speak for other auctions. Nothing shows discretionary spending levels like a car auction. Stay tuned folks, lots of scared people. No one spent $ at BJ.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

Observations from a couple of first timers and non-bidders (my brother and I are just car guys and we went for the spectacle from Thu-Sun):

- If you are a car guy - this is definitely a must see event.
- While Barrett is certainly the Big Dog and has the carnival/circus atmosphere, we thought it was a well run event with plenty of staff and a great location where you could get inside out of the weather. After 3 days of walking around we still ran into things we did not see previously, cars or otherwise. Plenty of washrooms, good food vendors, transportation, security, etc. Well thought out.
- We were able to also go to Russo & Steele Friday morning, the Pavillions on Saturday early afternoon, and some other attractions around the area - we'd highly recommend this to really get the full effect of auction week.
- We were surprised at the lack of bidders in the evenings. On Thursday night they were telling non bidders to come in and sit in the bidders area, assumingly to fill seats for the TV coverage so it did not appear that there was no one there. We were able to sit in the 3rd row. We were also surprised that on Friday night there did not seem to be as many cars breaking above the $100k barrier - where it seemed in the past it was just the opposite - that not many on Friday night were under that $100k amount. We did not keep a spreadsheet to scientifically prove this but that was our perception. After the Steven Tyler car went off the place kind of emptied out.
- Not sure what to say about the prices, other than a lot of the people we talked too said their perception was that they were off 20-30%. Reasons we heard......maybe the supply and demand curve is changing, maybe a strong stock market, maybe it is just the normal fluctuation, maybe, this event in the past artificially inflated prices due to poorly informed non-car guys with some money paying more than market to get in the game, maybe there are more people like us that are there for the spectacle and not to buy or sell.
- As for us - we really enjoyed it and will probably make the trip again. The cars were great, but the people we were able to meet and talk to is what we enjoyed the most.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

Sorry to hear your Z didn't bring the $ you were expecting. I do remember watching it go over the block and Jerry M did try to promote it as being a really nice Z from what I recall. I guess most of the buyers are like me not very educated on what is original, NOS vs aftermarket and just buy what they like the looks of? I really did like how your car looked and I thought the colour combo with the vinyl roof looked awesome! I prefer cars with the ZL2 hood and the spoilers but that is just a personally preference.

I am surprised that BJ can find so many people willing to sell their cars at no reserve. It must be nerve racking watching your car go over the block!

I saw one mopar do well (like the yellow 440 4 spd bird). $200K I think. That seemed healthy.

Corvette resto mods did very well (yr after yr). That is where the money is.

I can't watch BJ live on TV, the commercials dominate too much. Even when reviewing the recording, there is so little to review compared to the cars that go through, it really a shame. I am 100% ready to stop having the Velocity channel on my cable bill, all I do is really pay for commercials and not enough real content (sorry for the rant).

Take a stock corvette, paint it monochrome, put an LS motor in it and some billet parts and an aftermarket frame and it will bring 100K more than a stock resto. Looks like the easiest way to make money.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?

I've gone the last 10+ years and I would say the prices were down. last year I thought was a bad year for quality restos. I am partial to olds and found much wrong that year. another thing was this year they moved the opening night gala to sunday night vs Monday and it was disappointing. In the past the local higher end restauraunts donate food and its a taste test of many foods from places most people would not dine at $$$$$. This year you almost had to search for something to eat, no women in fancy gowns standing around and no notable headliner music entertainment. last year they had zac brown band, brett michaels has been there to name a few. Like him or not but even craig used to give a welcome speech and I didn't see him. Its worth going just to see the eye candy and let me tell you there are PLENTY of 45+ women with non-numbers matching parts walking around. Its included in the bidders pass so It's something to do. I also hear he gets 40% of the food vendors out side plus their fee just to get in. That to me sounds greedy and explains why there isn't barely anything under $10 for lunch. I wonder, how many good cars can be left out their? I'm not the biggest street rod guy but sat eve I almost raised my hand to the ex-Jimmy Shine famous hot rod truck. If you know so-cal speed shop then you know the truck, blown flathead etc. It hammered for $87 and sold last year for $250!! It is fun to get away although where I'm from it was warmer here then there Saturday.

Because of the corvette resto mods on BJ my wife gave me a break on selling one I (a 61) have so we can research what it would take to do it. Car is almost gone to a farmer in minnesota, but we are rethinking that deal, putting it on pause. I guess that is kinda good news.

I heard them mention that it started as a Grand Prix. I also heard someone say that GM had $800,000 invested in the car.

And lets not forget that it could not be titled for street use for reasons I do not recall but they did explain it on TV.

I've been attending for at least 7-8 years. Always a great time. Ran into Stefano sitting across from me at the Talking Stick coffee bar. I was looking at Facebook on my phone, had just seen a post of his and looked up and he was right in front of me.

I thought the prices were a bit soft too. Tons of people, great cars, and a great time, but prices soft or getting back to normal?

Outliers were definitely the Mulsanne Blue LS6 at $180k and the Red LS6 at $240k. How do you explain the $240k?

Some of my favorites:

A Hugger Orange '69Z hammered at $125k. Beautiful car.

A '67 SS427 Impala Convertible from the Charlie Thomas collection. Far from perfect and had a later 454 in it, but it sold for only $22k. I would have bought that and enjoyed driving it in Seattle everyday from July 1st - September 15th for that money.

Would they be considered Resto Mods? LOL

Think I spotted you on the live broadcast.....Did you buy a Fiat Jolly (or something of the like)? I glanced up and thought I spotted your face.

It has a little more power than a Jolly.
