1970 Olds W-30 4 speed Holiday Coupe

1970 Oldsmobile W-30, 4 speed, Holiday Coupe

Total production of all W-30s in 1970 is 3,100 vehicles.

Only 1,032 Holiday Coupes were equipped with 4 speeds from the Factory.

It has been estimated that less than 25% of the 4 speed cars exist today with original engines, transmissions and documentation to prove the 4 speed status.

A broadcast card can prove W-30 option status, color and some options, but will NOT prove 4 speed transmission. You need, a window sticker, line sheet or GM of Canada docs, etc

A 4 speed W-30 is extra special in the OLDS/Muscle car world in that it used a unique long duration 328 degree cam shaft (No a/c or power brakes available) which made more power. This is what helps provide the W-30 that unmistakable chop and lope.

This is unique with OLDS for 1970, in that other Top tier / max efforts Muscle Cars generally had the same engine / cam whether automatic or manual. The Hemi, Stage I, RAIV, LS6, SCJ, AMX etc all used the same camshaft/engine regardless of transmission. In some cases the autos could be quicker car, but not with OLDS and the extra power it produced.

While it is known that the stated 370hp for both the auto and manual were underrated as similar auto cam profile Olds/455s had been rated at 400hp prior, The big cam made more hp at the top end.

Here is one of the few known to exist 4 speeds with documentation and all original drive train as well as an established provenance.

Based on our research, We believe that that this W-30 may have only had three prior owners.

The family we obtained the car from had owned it for approx 22 years.

The car is from Oregon so it is dry and solid with all original GM metal.

It is an original Silver car with, Black stripes and black bucket seat interior and one repaint.

It is a no console car, sport wheel and 3.42 posi

It shows under 16,000 miles and was sold to the previous owners as original miles. They did not dive it much during the 22 years they owned it.

The original numbers matching engine and trans will be freshened and detailed with new clutch and Gardner exhaust as well as fresh and safe Goodyear tires.

Mr. Stephen Minore has also inspected this W-30 and issued his Rocket Report certificate of authenticity.

Price is $110,000.00.

All the pics I have are from the day after I got it home and took it on an extended test drive, prior to any cleaning or detailing. My computer files were hacked and are being held hostage for $3,000.00......so the hackers have the more recent pics.

I believe this is my friend Dean Cardella’s old Oldsmobile 442 W-30 4spd coupe. He was the second owner and found it in Oregon when he originally purchased the car. Dean was a longtime Oldsmobile collector. It was an incredible car. Dean said it was the fastest car he ever owned. Here are a few pictures that I have of the car while Dean was the owner. I believe some of the pictures are from when Dean had it at the “World of Wheels"car show in Chicago. Very cool find Stefano - I always loved this car! John

Yes, I believe this was Dean's W-30. The prior owner I got the car from Hit a Jack-Pot / Slots in Vegas and sought out the best W-30 he could find at the time. Do you know how I can contact Dean? I had met him a few times over the years. Also, how old are the pics you posted?

Hey Pete… Thank so much for posting the pictures. I don’t post that often on the board. So I am not sure exactly what I am doing wrong. The pictures showed correctly in the preview but not in the actual post. Thank again…I really appreciate your posting the photos.

Stefano …I will E-mail you the last contact information that I had for Dean. However, I haven’t spoken with him for several years now. I know Dean sold the car at Volo probably in the early 1990’s This was probably one of my favorites of all of Dean’s W-30’s over the years. Thanks again! John

Might be one of the few real and documented W-30s sold out of that place.

Thank you.

Just curious if the rear spoiler was added later. It looks to be in primer in the last photo.

Very neat car either way.

Re: 1970 Olds W-30 4 speed Holiday Coupe

Yes, my friend Dean added the spoiler soon after he got the car from Oregon. He said he always liked the look of the spoilers on the coupes. Dean had extensive paperwork & documentation on the car. It was one of the finest W-30’s out there.

While Dean had his W-30 4spd car on consignment at Volo - they were also selling an original paint 1970 442 W-30 coupe from The Otis Chandler Collection. At the time (early 1990’s) I don’t believe Volo had the questionable reputation they later developed. Again these cars were not trading for the astronomical prices that they later acquired.

Thanks Pete for sharing the dragstrip video. That is so cool! I love the original film footage. It almost looks to be a stripe delete W-30.

Yes, the spoiler was added to original deck lid.

That is Tom Kelly's W-30 Post. Originally Silver (Platinum) but was repainted early in it's life. Now Black with Gold Stripes.

Most muscle car enthusiasts know that the horsepower

ratings of the engines were deliberately set lower than what they actually made. Usually for insurance reasons and so the cars could run in a more favorable class in drag races.

Noted auto journalist Roger Huntington wrote an article about what these engines actually put out; here is the list: (All are gross hp & torque figures.)

Notes:
-The most underrated was probably the 428 Cobra Jet engine... its official rating of 335 hp was a joke, especially considering that the 390-4 bbl engine was also rated at 335 hp.

-The second-most underrated was probaby either the Mopar 426-Hemi or the 340-4 bbl. The 340-Six Pack was not listed, but with an advertised hp of 290@5000 rpm and torque of 340@3200 rpm, I would guess about 335 hp @ 6000 rpm.

The Standard 4 bbl 350 Grandma Olds put out 310.......so add higher compression select fit rotating assembly, huge duration cam/kit, special carb, dist and aluminum intake, plus special heads with better ports and huge valves and Ram Air /OAI........yeah I think thats good for 50hp at the flywheel

Re: 1970 Olds W-30 4 speed Holiday Coupe

Thanks Stefano…Great information! Oldsmobile’s GM John Beltz had major plans for the W-Machines. Sadly the new U.S. governmental emission regulations put an end to the release of the incredible W-43 set for 1970-1971 Oldsmobile 442 W-30s.

As far as the ZL-1 – I remember reading that the L-88 produced a bit more HP than the ZL-1 due to the heat/compression it produced therefore creating more HP. Although the HP gains were offset by the weight savings of the aluminum block and heads of the ZL-1.

Still available and very difficult to find a W-30 with proof (factory docs) that is was born a 4 speed and thus received the special 328 degree Cam as well as a bunch more HP. A large percentage of the existing cars have no such proof.

DW31S 05-14-2017 03:55 PM

Great car and posts Stefano. I couldn't agree more. The real joke in Oldsmobile isn't the 350/310, it's the early 330s. How about a '67 Cutlass that Granny or the Librarian goes into the showroom to buy. She wants a four door with white walls. Standard engine is a 330/320 horse with single exhaust and an open rear that would annihilate that poor right rear tire. 330/320 steel crank, would rev to 6500 before floating the valves, and probably so 90 in first gear of the Jetaway. One of Oldsmobiles secrets was that engine with a 4-speed and 3.23 in a light 2Dr post. Would embarrass a whole lot of takers.

The car had a line sheet which has the VIN and option codes when I got it. This makes it unique in the W30 world as the broad cast card doesn’t verify the 4 speed status. But it is always nice to add more documentation.
