Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
Weighing it is about the best way to tell.

Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
Mike, it goes by weight. The originals are 4 oz, the repros are about 8 oz. judging by the rest of your car, I would bet that yours is original! Beautiful car!!

Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
I will guarantee mine are originals, I have several to choose from. I would like to see the bottom area of the repro one Bob Harris offers.

Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
and once they are on the car who would really know except the owner.

I have a couple of originals and left them because of the patina and wear from those power shifts |

Jeff,
The 4oz repop I purchase was not from Bob, but another seller 3-4 years ago. Here's the bottom you requested side by side. |
Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
I had a bunch of these over the years
I normally sell them with original pealing chrome so the buyer knows they are original from what I can tell the original was a casting the alu repop looks to be machined from solid aluminum so the originals have a more porous look vs more smooth surface of the aluminum repop. alu and steel repops have better looking chrome surface then an original Most originals I see had pealing original chrome. I have one original that does not have pealing chrome but the chrome wore thin and shows the porosity and surface imperfections |

Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
The originals are non-magnetic with the exception of the thread portion.

Re: 1968-69 Original GM Chrome Shift Ball
Can you tell the difference driving with an original vs repro ? Does that mean an after market one will shift easier since it's heavier ?
