Community Chevrolet Sales Inc., Berwyn, Illinois
I just bought a 67 L78 engine with a Norwood Camaro VIN on it that came from Community Chevrolet. Does anyone know of a 4k 67 from the area.

That's not much to go on. What's the VIN?

Nothing on that car. I saw that block when it was for sale and the pad looks original.

Re: Community Chevrolet Sales Inc., Berwyn, Illinois
Hi, this was my neighborhood dealership. Emil Bergl, founded Community Chevrolet located at 7025 W. Ogden Ave. in Berwyn which he owned from March 1950 through June 1970. The dealership then became Jack Phelan Chevrolet which stayed in the building that Bergl continued to own until October 1997 when Phelan built his own store at 4000 S. Harlem Ave. in Lyons, IL. I started my career in the car business at Jack Phelan Chevrolet in the old building and was there when we made the move to Lyons. I remember Emil Bergl coming into the dealership in early 1997 to switch out his demonstrator model that Phelan continued to give him as a perk. Emil Bergl died in 2002.

Bert, I worked for your Grandfather. For that matter, he and you Grandmother were at my wedding. Ask your Uncle Mike, or Uncle Bob if they remember Al Zak. I'm guessing your Mom is Julie. I do remember your Uncle Tim, too. Contact me. I think I still have a few of the dealer rear stickers from Community. I was a Technician there for a while. I'd like to go more in depth but not on an open forum.

I'm glad you liked them. You must be the reason I saved them for all these years.

Re: Community Chevrolet Berwyn
Hello everyone, I am brand new to this forum. I found it doing a search for Community Chevrolet in Berwyn Illinois. I have an interesting car and story. I bought a 1965 Black El Camino in 1977 that was purchased new by Herron and Son Funeral home in Berwyn for use as a flower car! It was purchased from Community Chevrolet! I have the Protect-o-plate in the original owners manual with both names in it. I drove this car in the late ‘70’ s but replaced the 283 2 bbl and power glide. It went into my dads garage and sat until the late 80’s . At that time I was going to have the cracked and worn lacquer repainted. I had it stripped and prepped for paint and once again parked it while our 3 kids were young. In the mid 90’s I took the body off the frame and sand basted the bottom and frame and rebuilt all suspension, steering and brakes. Back in the garage again it sat until August of 2019. Since then I have finished restoring it. It now has a “close as I can get it” L79 and lots of factory and dealer options. I have driven it about 700 miles since completed. The car had about 48k on the odometer and is now around 57K but none of the original drive train is left. Of course it’s Tuxedo Black yet! I would love to hear from Community Chevrolet fans and find some memorabilia. An old funeral photo with this car in it would be amazing. Any 65 dealer items would be great. Russ

I remember that funeral home. Just South of 31st and Oak Park. I can't say that I remember the car though. That goes back to the days when I was a Senior at Morton West. You might search on line for something out of the Berwyn Life newspaper. It's possible that it may appear there. Do you still live in that area?

I live about 40 miles south in Crete , Illinois. Do you have any more of the dealer stickers?

Killer story about the elco.
My family owned Cook Chevrolet Oldsmobile in Bristol NH from 56-72 they sold a 62 Impala Wagon with a 409 4 spd as a Flower Car to the local funeral home. In order to entice the son into the family business he was allowed to order whatever he wished for power train as long as it was a black wagon. |
Very cool story! I’d love to see some pics of the car and docs! Did you do some research and try and reach out to the original family who owned the funeral home? It might be worth it to try.
