Re: Grumpys 69 camaro

As an aside, did Jenkins ever have a tunnel rammed BB in a 69? or, what type engine did he run in his 69 car when it had the G. lump? I know the car had a ram, I think starting around 70 and it started as a BB car. So it would just go to reason, but maybe, and I do not know, by the time he experimented with TRs, he may have only did SBs with a ram in his 69 car?

Re: Grumpys 69 camaro

Good eye on the background "Wallace & Silman" photo. I don't know the answer to that one, maybe Doug might have some input. I read somewhere (I read a lot of vintage race car stuff) that Jiggs' '69 is in private hands and tagged for street use although it doesn't get out much. Supposedly, the owner is fully aware of just what he/she/they have and don't want it publicized. I'm NOT saying or confirming this to be factual info., merely passing along what I saw in print. I also read, and photos do confirm that Jenkins was NEVER concerned with the "looks" or "cleanliness" of his race cars, only the way they in which they performed. Seems like every picture of every car shows duct tape, wire ties, mismatched paint, etc.
And of course I was "speaking" in jest with my comment about calling and making the offer; the low-ball $1000.00 offer was funnier yet!

Ya sure!

Starship 09-18-2017 11:26 PM

Has the existence of the 69 car been verified. One was being displayed as "the real deal" this weekend. Other than that the owner was clueless. Anybody know what's up.

William 09-19-2017 01:50 AM

The VIN for Grumpy's 69 is known.

big gear head 09-19-2017 12:18 PM

Was his '69 a ZL1?

William 09-19-2017 02:44 PM

No. It was built as an L78. He swapped in a ZL1 engine from one of the production cars. Later I believe he switched to a 430" Can-Am block.

Starship 09-21-2017 02:06 PM

But, has it been found and or verified?

William 09-21-2017 02:44 PM

Soon as someone posts the VIN we will know.

If it is the real McCoy they can begin negotiating with Jenkins family. Without the original paperwork it is just another old race car.

iluv69s 09-25-2017 11:54 AM

If the VIn is known, why would they need to negotiate with the Jenkins family ?
When I bought my ZL-1, I did not have to negotiate with the original owner or anyone because the VIN was known also. .... (although I did later get a bunch of paperwork on the car, but never found the actual original owner)

William 09-25-2017 12:10 PM

The Jenkins VIN is known only because of the paperwork. The Jenkins family may still have that info. Would you trust copies?

ZL1s were known because a Chevy executive retained the VIN list and released the info.

Yeah I was looking at that car earlier. He makes it sound like a Jenkins car, but it obviously isn't. I don't think bill ever ran a Powerglide.

I can't believe that they are still trying to pass that car off as the real toy IV.
