'62 Day-2
Not all Day-2 mods were stuff you could buy at a speed shop. Some mods were just "changes" based on the owner's inspiration and his idea of what he wanted his car to look like.
Cutting down an original grille and adding it in place of the original license valance made a unique look. Maybe ahead of it's time since Chevy's stylists did that in '65. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...nd_close_2.jpg Notice the emblem on the hood. The plastic insert was painted Nassau Blue to match the car. This pic was taken as soon as the car was brought home, before it got a bath. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc02995a.jpg He did the same thing to the rear trunk emblem https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ar_at_home.jpg As far as the interior, he molded his own custom aluminum pedal plates. A little wood grain on the dash and he moved the tach from the column up under the top of the dash. He made brackets for it to use an existing instrument cluster screw from underneath(no new holes). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics..._as_bought.jpg His mods to the engine compartment included the little chrome air cleaners (which came with the car), separate fuel lines with glass filters, '63 chrome valve covers, chrome generator cover, exhaust manifolds painted white, and of course, he had to put the Crower decal on the firewall after he installed the Super Stock Crower cam. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ngine_mods.jpg This was in the glove box https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc03037a.jpg Of course, he needed gauges to keep an eye on the engine health. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...l_swgauges.jpg He never installed a Hurst or headers or traction bars but he did upgrade to these 15x7 early ET mags. He took this picture of the car at an Englishtown show. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc03040a.jpg I think I'm going to leave everything pretty much the way he had it. Great looking "Day2" '62 Dan |
Re: '62 Day-2
Yep, the '62 is 10X the car the El Camino is but it turns into Rodney Dangerfield when the Elky is nearby.

Re: '62 Day-2
Jake,
IT was almost like the original owner wanted everything on the car to be either blue or shinny. He painted the wheels blue and ran baby moons for a while and switched the window cranks to ones from a Buick or Olds with the chrome knobs instead of the original black knobs. He removed the black paint from the top radiator tank and added a chrome oil fill tube cap and regulator cover, as well as the generator cover. Those things will be returned to stock. There were also chrome valve covers on it when I bought it but the original painted ones were hanging on the wall in the garage. He cut the tailpipe resonators out and grafted in a straight piece of pipe with fiberglass and added chrome tips. This photo was taken in late '62. Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc03047a.jpg The original spare still has the blue wheel. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dsc02973.jpg |
Re: '62 Day-2
Love the pinstripe whitewalls with the ET mags. Is that rear licence plate panel custom? It looks a little different than the OE ribbed aluminum panel.

It must just be the lighting. It's an original panel. As it was found. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...und_inside.jpg |
Re: '62 Day-2
Ok... guess it was just the picture.
A '62 SS is one of my bucket list dream cars. I helped my Dad restore a '63 when I was younger, and I fell in love with 61-64 Impalas. '62 is by far my favorite (with '63 in second place). |
Re: '62 Day-2
Verne,
Any way to see more pics of this car??? Car is amazing!! Mike |
Re: '62 Day-2
Well Mike, I have lots of pics of it as I got it, with the mold on the seats, etc. Then there's lots of it being taken apart, and some of the engine work and engine compartment work. It's still a work in progress so there aren't many pics that look "good".
I don't feel right cluttering up this Day-2 thread with a lot of those photos but here are a couple overall shots. The first thing I did when it got home was give it a good bath with hot water. I ran the hose into the basement connected to the set tubs and just rinsed it down thoroughly before using any soap. It hadn't seen the light of day or any water for 13 years. The owner had it painted in 1979 with lacquer and a lot of clear - pretty special for the times. Extracted from its tomb, loaded for home. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...fornewhome.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics....outsiderr.jpg This one is obviously after the engine was removed. some time later. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics....outsiderh.jpg |
Re: '62 Day-2
Looks like an old Richard Rawlings from Gas Monkey Garage running the roll back! Love the car!

Re: '62 Day-2
That's funny it does! My parents had a turquoise 63 when I was a kid was stolen twice! Cool car!!

Re: '62 Day-2
Thanks Marlin. That's my good friend, Lil' Joe from over 34 years who supplied his roll back. Little did we know that the Parkway was off limits to him, so after an abusive encounter with a NJ cop, he got a hefty fine (which I paid).
This shows about 1/2 the junk we had to remove from the garage that was behind the car, after we pried the door loose to get it open. Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc03016a.jpg IT was a tight fit in there. The two front tires were flat so I had to put on some rollers I brought to pull it out. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...nge_needed.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-dsc03012a.jpg |

Re: '62 Day-2
Yup, a commercial towtruck cannot operate on the NJTurnpike or Garden State Parkway unless they are one of the contracted carriers.
You're lucky they didn't impound the truck and load on the spot and then force you to pay to have the entire rig towed away by a contracted tow truck. And then pay storage fees... It'sa Joysey thing. |
Re: '62 Day-2
Well, instead of that, the trooper just unloaded his Navy-learned entire vocabulary on Joe!
Since it was privately owned, Joe had no business logo on the truck. HE gave him a rash of $hit about that too. Verne |
