Need/Want some day 2 insight...

Found a deal on an engine that I couldn't refuse. Going to toss it in my 69' Malibu for now to get it running. It's a C 15 73 dated 290 casting 402. Has 67' dated 390 casting oval port heads. Tall, finned aluminum valve covers, what appears to be an 3885069 intake - casting #'s, etc have been ground off an it has been polished. I also found a set of headers with a square, 4 bolt flange. I am going for a day 2 look with the engine. What should I do with the intake? I was thinking of blasting it to make it look rough cast again. What about the valve covers? Keep them polished? Or black wrinkle paint with just the fins polished? And what color heat paint on the headers?

I am going to run stock brackets and pulleys. Top it with a 750 holley I have laying around, and a factory open element air cleaner I have. It will be backed by a 2.64 1st geared super T10 I have kicking around, and the factory 3.31 posi 12 bolt. Going to look for some vintage wheels of sort to throw on it as well. Should be fun until I have the time and cash to build it exactly how I want it.

Build it how you want. If you are asking about finishes, colors, etc.- a pic would help me form an opinion which we all would be happy to give. Don't let them influence you too much though.

Sounds like a fun project!

Brian,

I cannot remember if we ever connected.....I love the '69 Chevelle.....and I love your plans.

What color combo is your Chevelle. I assume the original L48 is long gone?

Well done

Re: Need/Want some day 2 insight...

Dan, it is Azure Turquoise with a black interior. The original engine and transmission are long gone. But, have two L48s. One was in the car - out of a B body by the stamp. The other is a correct HA block. Both need rebuilding, and/or some hard parts. The 402 I picked up was a running engine last week. It was only removed to make way for a 671 blown 540.

I am having issues attaching pictures. Might have to host them.

Dan do you have an alert that goes off when the words 1969 chevelle and day 2 are used?

Brian, Dan could possible be one of the most knowable people on the planet when it comes to 1969 chevelles.

Dan,

You are far too kind and a great friend.

Re: Need/Want some day 2 insight...

Day 2 is whatever you want it to be as long as the parts themselves are vintage and of the era. Polished intake is just fine. I would even accept new parts that look old or are the same but new manufacture. Again, Day 2 is what you want it to be! Day 2 is the individual expression of the car as you, or the original modifier/owner, did it. It can be nit-picked on style and any number of aspects but as long as the parts are period correct it really isn't wrong. It's like fine art: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That motor looks pretty good as-is. Those VC's are old school looking for sure.

Just picked up a 69' M20 dirt cheap, going to use that instead. It was rebuilt about 5K miles ago. Guy pulled it to swap in an overdrive. I took the side cover off, looks brand new inside. Score.

Looks real familiar. I did the same thing with a 72 402. It has 1969 148 heads. I bagged my born with motor and put it away. I did a few things that are a little more modern like the wire stands for header reasons. Here's some pics:
