Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I don't know if others do what I do, but I like to go visit the fuel pump at 7am on a Sunday morning when no one is around.
I am not sure how many have pumps near their home. Not a lot around the burbs in Chicago I think, so I am a bit lucky with the one near me. I took a few shots waiting for them to open. I also finally took a picture of my cowl tag and noticed the characters are stamped at different depths. Someone should track real cars against those being considered as real, as I would suspect tags with same depths if all characters are the same. I never noticed it until now. Mopar fender tags show the same behavior (if real). Enjoy. http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...psaywrhen4.jpg http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...pswhfym9mg.jpg http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...pscglh4ewy.jpg http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...psmpjp6zb0.jpg |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Where is that? Only places I know of close with 100 octane at the pump are the Citgo stations in Bensenville and Roselle. Same $6.99 in B-Ville but usually $1-2 more at Roselle.

I was stunned when our Deltasonic here in Downers Grove stopped selling 100 octane non leaded for $8 a gal.almost 2 years ago.
I then found a CITGO in Glendale Heights @ 1458 Bloomingdale Rd.,just north of North Ave.that sells 110 octane leaded for $6.59 a gal. ,but for only 6 months, then they switch the pump over to Kerosene. This shit really wakes up your car, especially after Eric rebuilds your carburetor. The next closest after that is the SpeedWay in Willow Springs, selling 100 octane leaded for $8 a Gal. Here's a nationwide Race gas finder Nick.Just enter your zip in the search box. http://www.racegas.com/fuelfinder |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Thanks for that link Rick. I found a place that's a little closer to me that I didn't know about. It appears they have the SS100 California blend. I'll be checking it out.
Do you know a good tire place? |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I always visit the gas pumps by 6:30- 7:00 on Saturday morning Bob. Way to hard to take a nice ride by 8:00 am around here. I drop in about 3-4 gallons of 112 from my can and go to the Luke Oil and finish it off with some 93. Runs good with no issues winter or summer. Best time to cruise is early mornings.

Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I don't take my car to that particular station.I bring five empty 5 gal. tanks instead.I see way too many F****** nut jobs with their heads down staring @ their electronic devices behind the wheel on the way there.
Mark I do know a good tire guy..His names' Rusty Small. |

Elgin Mobil, On Mclean ave just off lake street (20). Kinda a crappy gas station, but my car loves the fuel. I tried running it on Shell 93 nitro gas, and it then runs 10 degrees or so hotter and sometimes runs on. When I run it on pure race gas, it runs cool and shuts off fine. |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Do not fill any vehicles up at any station while the fuel trucks are there replenishing the underground tanks ...as they fill those tanks it stirs up any sediment (junk) and you could be the recipient of fuel that you don't want .
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
True..two people I knew with 5.7 liter IROC Camaros both had that happen to em after filling up while the tanker was there.
Both had engines stalled within minutes of leaving the station. Later they contacted the gas station, and after showing the receipt w/time stamp, the tow charge and the mechanics estimate to fix it,the stations paid them. |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Geez, I gotta travel 75 miles to get to my nearest station with 100 octane. That sucks!!!
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I get 110 here for $6.29
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Here in my home state the highest octane gas available at the pumps is 98 (legal for road use). Haven't done it for a while, but we used to head out to the nearby regional airport and buy a few gallons of Avgas, then mix with the 98. Good times.

It's best to specify which characters you want deep and which you want shallow, as it can vary from plant to plant and month to month. Yours looks pretty good for 06A NOR. Probably real. You can also get tinted rivet caulk, so that it appears original and never removed. It's so nice this board is open to discussion regarding trim tag nuances. Other Camaro boards seem to discourage it. |

^ this is exactly why others discourage it.

Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
You guys have probably already downloaded the "pure gas" app - Shows you where the nearest non-ethanol gas stations are. Doesn't show the octane available though.

I use that for ethanol-free in my air-cooled 911. |

Man, that yellow camaro looks great next to that pump! I love those hubcaps, one of the few the big 3 got right.

Thanks! I bought those wheelcovers NOS-in-boxes at my local Chevy dealer (Bill Nelson in Richmond, CA) in 1980 to run on my first '67. A buddy kept them all these years and I got them back a year ago and snapped them on the L35. |

Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Lynn the 110LL at the local airport is Leaded 110 octane aviation fuel, should be the same thing as the Sunoco... I used to drive my vette out on the tarmac and fill it up, it was cheaper than buying it at the gas station as there were no road taxes on it.
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I can buy it at the local airport. Open 24 hours and can swipe a cc. No price posted. I just have to enter how many gallons I want (makes it impossible to fill up). However, it is never quite double for what I would have paid locally for 91 premium, meaning right now, it is pretty darn cheap for racing gas.
I am guessing the stuff at the Sunoco stations is also free of road taxes since it is specified as "off road" use only. |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Just paid $7.33 for Sunoco 110 leaded in Waukesha
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Question: Does using an aviation 100-110LL do any harm to an engine's component parts? After all, aren't most engines made to properly run on no-lead fuel?
Just wondering. Rick |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Long term would cause problems for anything with an 02 sensor and or cats.
Most of the cars we are talking about don't have either. |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I've been getting my 110 Sunoco leaded at Feece Oil Co in Batavia. Bring your 5 gallon can and they take you into the shop and manually pump it out of the drum.
|
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I have heard the AV gas is dryer fuel than real race gas & hard on valve seats ....
In my opinion if you can afford to have a car that needs race gas just buy the good gas ... |

Stopped at a local station after a car show in the area. These guys sell several different grades of racing fuel so I had them pump in 10 gallons of 114 leaded. |

Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
Another thing about fuel is you should use the octane the engine was designed for ...

It will actually slow the car down and just cost more money to purchase. I tried 110 race gas in my 68 L-78 chevelle at the BIR muscle car weekend and it slowed down. The car ran best with 100 low lead av gas and my motor made 480 hp due to a small roller cam, head work with bigger 1.88" exhaust valves and headers. It appears that you have a beautiful nova and I hope it runs as well as it looks. |
Re: Racing fuel and a real cowl tag...
I went and got 5 gal of VP110 last Friday at a local race engine builder shop in my own 5 gal can for $46. I previously had been running premium with octane booster in every tank, but the 302 (12 or 13-1, camel hump heads, roller cam, tunnel ram with dual holley's, etc.) in my Camaro absolutely hated it.
I took the car to a little 9/11 Memorial get together on Sunday about 20 miles away and the difference was enormous. The car ran so much better that I'll never go back to that pee water they call gas at the local stations. |

The car is a stock rebuilt L78 and it really only has to make enough power to get up the trailer ramp, so buying the 114 leaded (their lowest grade of leaded) was probably just a waste of money, but I was happy to treat the Nova to some good gas. The kid filling it thought seeing the gas cap behind the license plate was the coolest thing in the world. I told him that was common in the '60's, and he really liked that. He also said that he is not supposed to pump gas into a car with license plates, but I told him it has 1969 vintage plates so that doesn't count. He bought off on that and filled her up! |
