67 - 68 chevy II restorer

i have one of the 6 (ish) 67 L79 Chevy II's made and was curious who y'all think are some of the best restorers are for maybe this car? we are leaning on doing a lot of it ourselves but in case we decide to go another route I'm wondering who you would send it off to if you were in my shoes.

the reason i put 68 in the title is bc there are many engine similarities with a 68, as these cars appear to be a sort of pre-run for the 68 cars.

many thanks in advance.

kasey

Just north of bg. I'd say we are about a little over an hour away from each other. Pretty cool!

We'll have to meet up sometime at a show or something, or better yet SCR when it's back at the corvette museum this year

the car is very, very solid with basically no rust and the floors are awesome. not sure, but it might be the only blue/blue one they made.

07A

I believe all of them were very late builds. Very interesting cars to say the least, with all their unique features.

Re: 67 - 68 chevy II restorer

I wish someone had the internal GM documentation showing why they ever built a handful of cars so late in the model year. If you think of the reality of production, there were a lot of engineering changes (Bills of material, etc) that had to happen to put this engine in a platform that was on it's way out of production. There were significant differences from the '66 Nova L79, and even the L79 used in other '67 Chevelles / Corvettes. You gotta wonder WHY, since they knew that the '68 Nova was going to be nothing like the '67.

Seems like a big mystery as to why this handful of cars was ever produced.

I always Loved the ZI engine code and Block, so unique to the build. I had a customer that bought a Rat 1962 Corvette that had an original 1966 ZI 327 / 350 Chevy II engine in it and I was always amazed what GM did to install that in a Chevy II chassis (Recessed oil filter / front sump oil pan, ect) What an Engine! (as one a machinist I used once said: ("Motors are Electric")

What an Engine! (as one a machinist I used once said: ("Motors are Electric") I guess that machinist has no knowledge of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, motorcycles, etc. This argument has gone on for eons -- to each their own. TAZ

Nice car. Would like to see it all back to correct/original. Hope you have the original hood.

I believe from the classic definitions, an engine can be a motor but a motor can't be an engine.

Bill & Paul -- good points ... but I like calling an engine a motor just to drive the purist up the wall and start a debate with them that they will wind up losing. TAZ

Seems like there should not be a Saginaw behind a '67 L79. The '68 L79 Chevy II/Nova came with a Muncie.

No the other 67 Chevy II's I'm aware of got the Saginaw.

Are you saying Muncies and Sag's were both supplied w/ the dozen or so/whatever actual '67 L79 production was?
Also, is it known specifically that all '67 L79 production were 2-Dr. Hardtops or any 2-Dr. Sedans possibly built/existing?
Lastly, what of any '67 Acadian L79 cars...built/not/body style/known?
Cool subject!

sorry, I've been busy the last couple days...

yep darrell, that prolly is an error on the pop. its actually R8 instead of P8. i believe that R indicates Saginaw, which is correct. All 6ish of these cars came with saginaw trannies instead of muncies for 67.

the 8 would mean 68, which could be an error. obviously you would think it is an error since its a 67 car, but i wouldn't rule anything out with these cars bc they are so unique that theres not much precedent for them.

with this car being a 7A car, it is very late in the model year, and i guess the possibility could exist for gm to be getting ready for the 68 model year. who knows???

honestly, i don't know if the car has the original trans in it. it probably doesn't. however, it does have a saginaw in it. I'm still somewhat new to the hobby and work like a maniac and havent taken the time to get the numbers off the trans.

thanks for the complement, paul. we do plan on restoring the car fairly soon. its a really solid car so the frame-off shouldn't be nearly as involved as most cars would be. yes, the car came with a correct hood painted the same color, so it might be the original, but who knows?

by the way, my buddy hates the cowl hood on this car

he can't wait to see the flat one back on it.

Re: 67 - 68 chevy II restorer

The error I was referring to was the 8 instead of being 7. Saginaw is correct for the L79. But again as previously mentioned many of the 67 SS cars were Saginaw trans equipped.. Also find it intetesting that the FQ was the only diff that was available to the L79 to my knowledge..
