WTB 1968 Chevelle 3-speed floor shifter

I am converting my 1968 El Camino from a three-on-the-tree to a floor shift. I'm looking for a three speed shifter for a Saginaw Tranny, or whatever aftermarket shifter will work.

Thanks

I believe I have an original Hurst three speed shifter still in its original box when I get motivated I'll go did it up and see exactly what it is. Been in my stash thirty years lol

Re: WTB 1968 Chevelle 3-speed floor shifter

it takes a special cross member to use the factory shifter...im not sure a 3 speed on the column car would have the cross member needed..the shifter bolts to the cross memeber on those cars..

it would be easier to buy a hurst shifter and stick the factory handle on it with a little work its a better way to do it..just my opinion..ive done its a dozen times..shifts better..easier than trying to scrounge everything up today...some of the stock stuff is really hard to get

and theres more hardware to those stock shifter needed, than shown in the pic above..

Thanks for the replies and feedback! I'd be interested in whichever works.

I'll have a look at the cross member in my Elkie...

The hurst shifter sounds like a good solution. I look forward to getting more details.
Thanks!

Did they even put a sagnaw floor shift 3 speed in those cars?I believe the only 3 speed floor shift avail was the hd muncie 3 speed which the shifter and linkage i think is different. The pic of the shifter above looks like a muncie 3 speed version .

The tranny in my Elkie has a maincase casting number of 3925647.
Appears to be a Saginaw 3 speed (RPO M15).

Here is the Three speed tranny with the old three-on-the-tree linkage
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...psffqdqgkw.jpg
and here is the elkie and cross member with a temporary M22 4-speed in place...
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...psn5weoqy6.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps8d41nzgk.jpg

I believe this is the correct cross member to bolt an original Muncie shifter to, but I'd gladly put in a Hurst 3-speed shifter if I can get one for a reasonable price.

I'm pulling out the M22 because I'm going to sell the Elkie and I sure won't get value for the M22 4-speed bolted to the 307 (although it made the Elkie much more fun to drive).

Re: WTB 1968 Chevelle 3-speed floor shifter

no i dont think its a floor shifted stick shift cross member...it has hurts linkaage and shifter..

you see the bracket the trans mount is on? theres another on the other side for a stick, one bracket faces forward,,the other faces rear... it doesnt mean your stuck..it means the factory shifter pic'd above has no where to mount

so, if you want to use a stock shifter you need a cross member also

its been re-poped i think...but maybe not..because you also have the prob with the elcamino has a boxed frame like a convertible...a stick shift for the floor, convertible cross member is a real valuable piece,,68-72 convert, sprint and elcamino work..

so, what you need is the bracketry to put a shifter on a transmission that has nothing there to mount it to...and its really a joke whats out there...you have no bosses on the tail shaft for a floor shifter..

i have a set i took off a 70 cutlass..let me see if i can find it..it will give you an idea what you need..i also have a crossmember thats been hacked on but you can see the extra bracket..or, just do a search on ebay..it will pop right up..

Re: WTB 1968 Chevelle 3-speed floor shifter

maybe,,im not sure but i think thats thats camaro stuff because of the way the shifter pushes the handle over..like a 69 camaro type shifter..and may work just fine

Dave novaboy had one of those brackets just a few weeks ago..

but yes,,that would be what id try...but i dont think it will fit on your floor hump...i wrote this before i saw you post check it out..see the stuff i have here...see if its a little easier..but humps are cheap now

the more i look at it the more i like it..

ive done this more than a few times in the past..to the best of my memory heres what i used

i can see in the pic you have a hump/porch for a console..and that takes a diff shifter too

heres a 4 speed cross member to use a stock shifter, but i wouldnt buy one id get around it..but if you want to use a stock shifter, you need one...for a convertible or elco...and they are expensive

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-69-...5n&vxp=mtr

i dont have the cutlass stuff. i pitched it..i thought id never used it and threw it in the scrap pile when i moved

heres the mount kit you need for that trans,,its rickety..but works, you get crazy and it moves..they have come a long way since the 70s or 80s..it may be fine to sell the car..but it will not fit in a console shift hump..you need a non console hump..it has more pick up points than the old sets had..may be nice now

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hurst-367001...H4&vxp=mtr

heres the hump...but it may not fit in it either...if it where me, id call or talk to a hurst supplier. tell them you have the trans you have, and its in a chevelle floor shift with no console, they may have a better way...and the shifter may come out in the hole right..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/68-69-70-71-...Uw&vxp=mtr

its not going to be hard to change it over..it just may cost some money..but i bet you can find the shifter stuff used if you stay on ebay..thats where i get stuff for cheap when i dont want to spend money..i just educate myself and stay on it

you dont really need a 3 speed shifter either..i just used what i had and most of the time it was a used 4 speed shifter and i just left the rev rod out..worked fine..you can do it really cheap..the rods..those could be hard to get..hard to find the right ones is what i mean

Morning Helmut, I've got a 'new in the box' aftermarket 3 speed shifter you might be interested in. I'm on the West side of the Rockies in Kelowna. Let me know one way or the other and we'll go from there.

Regards
Cal

Thanks Cal. I've got a new Mr. Gasket 3-speed shifter on its way right now. If that doesn't pan out, I'll contact you. Thanks for the offer!

Cheers
