'69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

Anyone DIY on your own water pump? Rebuild kit availability? If not, who is the go-to place if DIY is not advisable?

Thanks!

That's why I suggested not messing with it, White Post is another good one for fast turns. What exactly are we doing to Black Beauty Sam

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

My "Black Beauty" (as opposed to yours) is gushing with spring fever, but recently she is also gushing green fluids from her water pump. Eric's magic on the 4346 has her humming nicely, but she doesn't get far while spewing her juices! Still considering having Eric go through the engine. No issues but peace of mind mostly. I am going to register her (for the 1st time for me). In rural AZ I drove around my neck of the woods with minimal traffic and unwanted attention , but here it is a bit busier on the roads - time to legitimize! I already have a nice set of '69 Ohio plates that I picked up. This summer is busy for me but hope to start the D2 transition......can't wait !!!!

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

That's a great looking set of plates. No reason you can't display them at the Chevelle show in August of course you will need to bring the whole car since the plates will be on Black Beauty by then. Always a good time there.

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

My plot thickens. So, it looks like my pump was replaced at some point, so I will need to track down a correct one. Here are the numbers on my pump:

Date Code: J 22 9 (Oct 22 1969)
Cast #: 3969811

Just out of curiosity I was wondering about the codes on my pump. I now know my pump is for MY '70 BBCs but I was under the impression that "-811s" would have a two digit year code i.e. "69" vs "9". Anyone know when the cut off was when the "-811s" started to use two digit year codes?

BTW: I believe I need a "3931065" with a date of March, April, or May '69 (up to 5/23 when my engine was put together) - I will check with Goulds, but if any have a lead, I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

Sam, based on my inventory the 3969811 changed from a single year digit to a two year digit between November 11 1969 and January 27 1970.

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

Ha, you have a good point there Rick!

No joy from Goulds for a correct pump.

Found this statement on the "infallible" internet: "In April of 1969 a modification was made to pump #065 and it was assigned a new casting number (#3969811). " Is this true? If so I may be able to use an 811 from April/May.

Thanks,

That seems to support the statement I read. So his "811" on ebay should be correct. Anyone know this fellow?

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

I will always defer to the 'gurus' of the SYC...

But, isn't that component date a little too close to the engine assembly date? I don't know where the water pumps were produced and/or how long it took to get them to the engine plant...but, there are only 4 days between the pump and the engine. I would think a little more time would have been needed...we are talking about 1969, things didn't happen that fast...or did they??

You may have a good point Tom. Anyone, anyone, Ferris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW if you cant get to the ebay link, the one for sale is a rebuilt "811" with a cast date of May 19th and my engine was assembled on May 23rd.

Re: '69 L78 Water Pump rebuild

I know that this doesn't pertain to BB pumps, but I had luck with some reman pumps from NAPA that codes and dates were close for my small blocks. Cheap too. Had one apart to find the cheap finned sheet metal impeller, but oh well. The only reason I went that route was because new pumps would throw pulley alignment out by 1/8 of an inch. Passed that on to my boss when we had to replace pumps. Sorry for the hi jack.
