70 Nova Air Cleaner...

Being a BB guy my knowledge on the small block components is lacking

Need help clarifying what air cleaner came on the L48 with a 4spd...some folks tell me there was no heat tube, others say yes. I know one of you experts can help.

Photo below is like the unit I have with the chrome lid.

thanks, wilma

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

Was it a 4 speed or auto?

The main questions seems to be about the heat pipe only be used on automatic cars and not on 4 speeds...can you add to this?

thanks..tom

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

The stove pipe (thermac) would have been used on all automatic 350.

The manual shift 350 cars received the AIR system (smog pump) and did not have the thermac system, so no stove pipe.

That may have been correct for 1969...but,I was under the impression that in 1970 the smog pump was a CA item or solid lifter motor [L78, LT1, LS6]...in 1970 the TCS system was added instead.

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

You may be right. But.. doesn't a 70 LT1 (Z/28) have a smog pump for all 50 states. Didn't all the Deuces come with smog pumps?
I believe the standards were the same for 69 and 70. Of course, that doesn't mean GM couldn't have used another means to accomplish the same result.

I bought a new 70 1/2 Z car in NM and I don't remember it having a smog pump -- of course that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ... CRS might have set in since then. TAZ

As I stated...all the 1970 solid lifter motors got the pump [Z28, Deuce, L78 Nova...Chevelle...Camaro and the LS6 Chevelle]

The low horse cars did not have the pump...except for CA.

So, we are back to the beginning..did the 1970 L48 4spd cars use the air cleaner with heat tube??

I have a few pictures of 2 original California 1969 Nova SS350 4-speeds. The engine with the manifolds is NovaJoe's silver right after he picked it up from the dealer in 1969. The other picture of the engine with the headers is my brown Nova. So Tom did you sell all those L78 Novas and now you have a SS350 Nova?

No [I still have 3 L78 Novas in the stable]...

I have a complete air cleaner assembly that some folks have inquired about. I wanted to be sure what applications it was correct for. I have the base, chrome lid, stove pipe and breather tube. I think it is correct for 1968-69 auto and 1970 auto and 4spd...just trying to confirm.

Any help from the techy gurus is appreciated.

Tom,
I'm thinking they started with the heat stove setup as a standard in 71 for 4spd. cars. I believe 1970 L48's w/4spd. were still using the heat riser flap.

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

Tom you may want to ask those guys over @ nastyz28.com. There maybe someone over there with original pics and info concerning the snorkel air cleaner w/L48 auto & 4spd.

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

68 was an altogether different animal. Check the factory assembly manual Tom. Im pretty sure the 70's had the thermac and stove pipe? Atleast that what is pictured in Chevy II Nova & SS muscle portfolio on page 99. Even though its an AC auto on the column.

Re: 70 Nova Air Cleaner...

I also have engine pictures of a 30k mile all original Rallye Green SS 350 69 Nova factory 3spd from York PA that did not have the thermac unit or stove pipe.
