Used enclosed trailer

I'm looking for an 8.5x24 or 25 enclosed trailer. It needs to have finished walls and floor (no raw plywood), an escape left side door, 5200lb axles, 10K gross weight with electric brakes, inside winch, counter & cabinets. An electric tongue jack would be very nice. Price must be under $9K.
Thanks
Verne

You want a cherry on top?

Seriously, I will look around here and see what might be available. Given the oil crunch, there are some great deals coming around here in OK.

Thanks Lynn,
I just missed one on ebay. I made a verbal deal with the guy, then 10 mins later he called back and said someone was coming over with the cash.

Good deals ARE out there.

Agreed, Featherlites are worth a premium but I won't consider anything without an escape door. No crawling through the car window for me.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

For less than $9k you can buy a brand new Haulmark with those specs, but 24' not 25'. Do they make a 25' that isn't custom? The only wood showing is the painted floor. Here's mine. The Model is TST85X24WT3. I would have loved to have a Featherlite, but for the amount I haul I couldn't justify the cost difference.
The only thing I'd love to have a little different to make it perfect is to have the get out door move the fender like on some models. Not really a big deal though. I also installed a Maxxair top vent in place of the factory one. Money well spent.

Sorry, pics won't open up in this section for me... The only thing you'd have to add is a winch and the cabinets, but that's pretty quick and easy to do.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

You might consider a electric winch instead of a escape door. They make them with wireless remotes so you can walk around the car to see both sides as you are loading in.

Verne_Frantz 03-01-2016 02:28 PM

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Nice looking trailer. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it.

Charley, I'd never heard of the wireless remote. I thought they all were hard wired by a cord to the winch. IT may sound like overkill, but I want both the escape door and the winch. Once I get used to it, I can drive the car in, but if it breaks, I'd need the winch.
There's something about the interior of this one (that I lost the deal on) that really appeals to me. Notice the inside fender boxes are only 6" high. The original owner had it built with a raised floor. (smart!) It's also a hidden dove tail.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Yes the wireless is just a key fob and really simplifies things. Also if you get a winch get one that uses a synthetic rope instead of a cable.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Something else to consider Verne is adding ramps all the way in be it aluminum or wood to raise the car a few inches in just those areas. I did my trailer with 1 3/4 blocks and the doors clear the wheel tubs. Doing that also gives you a little more clearance under the car to get at the tie downs. Most guys will run ramps all the way from the door to the nose. I instead mounted four 1'x1' blocks of wood so that the car rides up on them and that is where I stop. Just trying to give you ideas.

The remote winch is also worth every penny. I can actually sit in the car and pull myself in or let myself out with no assistance.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

That sounds like a pretty sweet setup, who makes the winch youve got?

We borrowed a friends enclosed trailer to bring Dad's 409 home from the MCACN show last year (after the snow storm that weekend) and it had the wireless remote winch. It was our first time towing a car in an enclosed trailer and that wireless winch made us amateurs look like pros. We had the car loaded up and tied down in a matter of minutes and were on our way home. Saved a lot of headaches for sure. It also had the escape door which I think I would want too if we ever bought one as it is a nice feature.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Thanks for reposting the pics 67Novaboy.
The wireless remote is priceless with or without the get out door, but you can add it to any winch with a cheap kit. I added it to my circa 60s/70s winch. It works great. Yes, it's time to update my winch lol..., but it still works great although a little slow.
That trailer looks just like mine with some nice add-ons. I really like those cabinets, but I wouldn't want the floor. It looks like it'd be slippery when it got wet or had oil on it. Raised floors are nice, but then you lose head room which is only 6 1/2' usually to begin with. I like the idea of maybe two 2" ramps to drive up on or something, but then you lose the point of the dropped trailer. Same goes with the raised floor. The ease of loading on a floor closer to the ground.
Something to also consider is what your hauling it with. All those add-ons add up and tongue weight adds up quickly. I wish I still had my F350 diesel then I wouldn't worry about it as much...

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Haulmark makes a good trailer, and they take a beating - ours is a '97 and while it looks rough on the outside I have the inside configured just the way I like with the big tool box and the spare mounted vertically behind it. I like the look of the cabinets, but could never understand how to best use that space - so I installed a tool cabinet and built a work bench top around it, with a vise! It has served us well, just a thought....

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psqvfslr3c.jpg

Sometimes it's more than just a work bench / tool cabinet!

Re: Used enclosed trailer

I bought mine about a year and a half ago. I did a ton of research and wanted the best I could afford. I did find out the Haulmark is not under the same ownership from days past. It was bought out by a larger corporation and the prior owner now bought Pace. I did buy a Pace. Again, do your homework on the build and the construction and materials used in fabrication and in the Axles. It make s a difference. I wanted floor centers on no less than 16", walls that were the same. The gauge of the outer skin, rivets or bonded sides, torsion or leaf spring, composite or plywood flooring, roof construction, yada yada yada. In the end, new was the only way to go to get what "I" wanted. In fact, it was cheaper in the long run because I didn't have to update and fix someone else's crap. If you're in a bad climate and it sits outside, where will the snow sit (flat roof) & stupid roof vent? Will the floor rot quicker where it's parked?

Re: Used enclosed trailer

All good suggestions and I appreciate them very much. I'm aware of the risk of a slippery aluminum floor. I experienced that when I crewed for Ronnie Evans with his trailer. On the trailer I missed, it still had 6'6" inside height because he had the whole thing raised. I've never seen a ramp like this one, so maybe he had that modified too.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-rear_open.jpg

I'm ok with pulling over 10Klbs. I recently picked up a used Silverado 3500 dully with all the towing extra features. And Rick, I did plan on putting down a couple 2x12s if necessary. The idea of having more room under the car to attach the straps is great. My cars don't sit that high off the ground.
Also, Charley, thanks for the idea of cord rather than cable for the winch. IF that cable snaps and anyone is near it, they could lose a foot! I was warned about that when we loaded Ronnie's '62.

You all have been very helpful.

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Yes, the trailer will sit outside so a rounded roof is desired. I like the idea of a roof vent though to help pull the hot air out of it in the pits. Hope the seal is a good one. I plan to put down an area of crushed stone to park it on. I'm hoping that will be a lot better than parking right over the ground. And a spare tire is a "must have".

Verne

I moved my trailer from Massachusetts to Michigan. The original vent broke when I was cleaning snow off the roof, not because of the weight of 3' of snow. I bought the Maxxair and I leave the "stock" vent wide open for air circulation. It's been open for a year now under HEAVY winds and quite a bit of snow last year. No problems at all and not a drop of water got in. The roof is a one piece curved top.
I like that ramp threshold. I'm going to do something like that with mine. No way on the stainless ramp though. I like my bones in one piece. I'm not as agile as I once was. ;)

That synthetic rope is a great idea...never saw one before until last Saturday when Bruce came to get the red Nova. I also have used trailers with internal ramps to raise the car up...it is another simple addition that really helps.

My 2004 Pace Shadow GT (Top of the Line) 20'10K GVW has the Glued On Side Skin (NO screwed fasteners)

Up near the top there are small areas of rust. Ive been told this is because steel frame that outside skin is glued too
wasnt painted and my skin is rusting from inside out

1) Anybody else know what I'm trying to point out

2) Anybody have a solution or "fix"

3) NO, Im not going to remove outside skin at this time

Thanks for your helpful suggestions

May I add that I changed my Pace American (see post above) from D to E Rated TOWMAX Tires that have a max inflated 80# PSI.

A very large western Tire Retailer Les Schwab claims to have had little come back with the TOWMAX brand.

I will admit that my trailer hasnt been used much and I cant personally vouch for the above tires

Chuck, My neighbor had a similar issue with his trailer. The siding delaminated. The manufacturer picked it up, put on an entire new side and delivered it back. I think your issue should also be corrected by Pace. My neighbor's trailer was also out of warranty but they still fixed it. It's worth a try.

Verne, My trailer was mfg in 2004 I think and surely out of any warranty ?????

I heard that PACE AMERICAN went out of business !!!!!!

The outside skin is fine where it is overlapped and bonded/glued.
My problem is very small RUST pockets that appear to be coming from backside.
Hard to explain........so I suppose I need to take pics and get them online!!!!!

Re: Used enclosed trailer

Chuck,
I just had an email today from a local dealer who said they could price a new Pace for me. Look at the Pace web site and the Cargo Express web site and notice the similarity in the layout and the specs. I think they are either owned by the same parent company or they merged.
I understand your description of the problem. A seal at the top must have let water in. Maybe you can just repair the visible rust and re-caulk the upper trim.

Verne

The screwless siding may look high class, but I trust screws more than glue. IF I order a new one, I'll just ask for SS screws.

Charley Lillard 03-03-2016 02:04 AM

Re: Used enclosed trailer

I have screwless Featherlite and a another and no problems. I would do screwless as the 3m glue is probably stronger than the screws.

It's an InTech Tag trailer. All aluminum, 10KGVW. They're all custom built. I added some options like a work bench and cabinets, electric tongue jack, some extra LED lighting, the winch with braided cord and a remote. I also spec'd a pair of 4" high inside runners to make sure I can open the car door. The extra 4" will also make it a LOT easier to attach the tie-downs. I saved some $$ in some other areas but it still came in a tad over $20K.
They're made in Indiana by an Amish workforce.

Verne
PS: It is screwless sides. That's all they make, I think.
