1970 Chevelle questions
Please tell me if this timeline is correct:
- At the start of the 1970 model year, the SS 396 was available as an L34 and L78, plus L89 heads. - Soon, the SS 454 package with LS5 was introduced. - Then, perhaps in November 1969, the LS6 was added to the SS 454 package, replacing both the L78 and L89. So, what I'm curious about, was the LS5 available concurrently with the L78/89 before the LS6 was introduced, as above? Or was the SS 454 package a complete replacement for the L78/89? Thanks! |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
My 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS5 convertible survivor was a very early car...
it has a T0806CRT assembly date/code on the motor, and 10D build date on the trim tag. |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
As Helmut's numbers would indicate and my understanding, the LS5 option was ready to go at the beginning of the MY for Chevelles.

Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
True,LS-6 was a separate entity slated for the 1970 Corvette only.
When that didn't materialize,it was later installed in the Chevelle after production had already started for the LS-5 Chevelle/Elco/Monte C. |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
A couple of sources to consider........
http://ls6registry.com/tech/trivia.htm http://www.chevelles.com/forums/15-t...h-factory.html Mid year for the LS5 in Chevelles seems early to me. Also the LS5 Convertible with a 10D date is certainly the earliest I've seen reported. Owned one as well and I thought it was one of the earliest with a 12C production.......still have a copy of the original build sheet. |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
Thanks for the responses.
It's interesting to learn how Helmut's car is so much earlier than other ones that are listed in the Chevelles.com link. |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
Don't know if this matters as far as the date code, but Helmuts Survivour car is 100% stock , and is also a Carolina Blue car,..... Would it have anything to do with being a special order paint car ?.
My guess is it was just a very early order LS5 , 4 Sp Convertible |

Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
Here's an under-hood photo (unfortunately someone touched up the upper visible part of the block, intake and heads at some point),
and a shot of the trim tag. http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...pskeqddju7.jpg http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...psbraxasrf.jpg |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
What a great car with a really neat option list. No cowl but looks like tilt, A/C, gauges, clock, AM-FM 8 track, buckets, console, remote mirror, and no power top? Is Carolina Blue special paint too?
|
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
Carolina Blue is a special order paint known as 926-96881 Blue Acrylic Lacquer. I know of two LS6 coupes in that color.

Yes, it has a manual top. Also has a map light mirror. The car has a neat history... was originally ordered by a woman, and arrived at the dealership without power steering (which an ordering oversight according to the original owner). The P.S was added at some point. |
Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
Did I see it shown under Al's Chevelles (website) years ago? Dealer - Alamance Motors / NC

Re: 1970 Chevelle questions
