An old Classic Motors ad ... |
Re: Old Newspaper Classified Ads
A couple of '69 SS Chevelles in there but I'd be interested in the 300 mph Plymouth jet car.

Re: Old Newspaper Classified Ads
How about some of those Ferraris....$30k then, $10 mil today. Some are more! 427 Cobras cheap, too!!!

Re: Old Newspaper Classified Ads
----Many of you may not know much about Classic Motors but I was working there at the time this add came out. Those were heady days. The Ferraris weren't ours but a good friend of Richards. Quite a line up though. Anyone notice that there were multiples of almost all the fuelies......Bill S

Re: Old Newspaper Classified Ads
Great posts, thanks! I have been considering joining one of those online digital newspaper archive sites. Can you search for keywords, VINs, plate numbers etc, or do you just have to browse and look?
|
Old Newspaper Ads
It's a mix of what papers have been scanned and how well any searches may work but any hope for Vins/Plate #'s etc would be if originally in the ads specifically and exactly the same as you're now searching too. I'm not pleased w/ the Newspapers.com group I'm riding with being as soon as you join, immediately they want more $ right away for what you thought you were getting in the first place so I'm sticking w/ my spot here in steerage and seeing how it goes? Can anyone here confirm area codes of the era for some of the ads above, we should at least try to backtrack the 427 Camaros? Cool stuff Jon and lets dig up a few more, really love that Koenig one!!! Re: Old Newspaper Ads
Great thread, Pete!
My sister worked at Koenig for a bit while in school down there. A few more cool ones where the Classic Motors ad came from ... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vintage...lden-years.html |

I believe that was right after my Dad bought his 67 from Richard. Neat times for sure. I remember as a 8-10 year old kid walking around the shop and showroom and even though I had absolutely no appreciation for what those cars were at the time in terms of rarity and collectability I knew it was a cool place to hang out. Fast forward to 1986 - the summer I worked there - and there were practically no Corvettes or Musclecars around anymore, mostly just the AMG stuff by then - but still a neat place with great memories for me. |
Re: Old Newspaper Ads
Most california ads had the lic. plate number.

Thanks, I'd been told that too. My car was delivered to Clippinger Chevrolet in Covina early April 69 but not sold until late June so I'm hopeful that it may've been listed for sale in a local ad during those couple of months sitting on the lot. |
Old Newspaper Ads
I tried for some 1969 Clippinger ads Tim but seems little available, do you know if Bob Wingate was your car's salesman? CA Plate #'s posted in old ads is a really great thing, hopefully it helps bring a few more car's histories to light! Here's a '77 Auction piece w/ comments by Richard Buxbaum of Classic Motors below also a few more old ads... Not sure about the salesman, car's original owner is still around but couldn't confirm. I've heard that Bob W was the top salesman at Clippinger, and the go-to guy for ordering performance cars, especially 'vettes, so maybe? Seems the car was a dealer stock order rather than a customer order, so someone there knew what options to tick off that would appeal. Aren't these ads such a great snapshot in time of an era when all that used iron was kicking around for not much $? |
Old Newspaper Ads
Here's a few more old newspaper ads, sorry some are so hard to read. I tried to save only pages w/ something cool listed so look carefully. So many 427 cars; Corvettes, Camaros and Novas, not to mention a couple '68 Z/28s.

Old Newspaper Ads
Yep but keep in mind I was plucking pages w/ the coolest ads of what I could find. I tried posting another batch but got kicked out when I pushed send so will try again tonight. ~ Pete |

One must assume that almost every Rat in the newspaper ads was a "427" back then! Think of how many were disassembled only to find an L35 inside? |

Anyone know the car in this '71 Salt Lake Utah ad below? One of the original ZL1's or just sporting an alloy lump? ~ Pete - https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3307-image.jpg - |
Re: Old Newspaper Classified Ads
----You are right, Tenney! But to be totally correct, Classic Motors had 5 locations over the years. I never worked out of the 1st as I was still enjoying Fort Liquerdale. Moved north in 1976 and went to work at the Ogden Ave address you brought up......Bill S
