Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Does the vin number for 68 and 69 Chevelles indicate an SS? Alan Colvin's book says that a Chevelle SS has a unique vin, but for some reason I thought that stopped in '67?

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
That was true for 68's but not 69's:-(

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Up to 1968 the vin will start with 138 if it's a real SS. That changed in 1969.

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Thanks all. A buddy picked up a '69 Chevelle this past Saturday in NYC, the plant on the trim tag is FM - assume that's Framingham?
This car is an 04C, 796 int, 57 / B pnt, with a plant code of 'G' in the VIN. A partial bld sheet shows engine code of JC, trans XF, axle KJ, wheels YA, and the options I can make out are: A51 buckets B22 SS 396 Dr Emb B74 SS 396 Ext Orn B80 Roof? B95 R/end? B96 R Whl Open? C08 Vinyl Top C24 Recessed Wipers D55 ? J50 disc brakes? J52 Pwr brakes? L34 the rest of the sheet is missing. I pulled the seat bottom out for him, but didn't see any remnants. If this is a Framingham, MA car, where did they put the build sheets?? |
Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
G (Framingham) cars (Pontiacs too) are notorious for the 1/3 BS (almost always the third of a sheet starting from the left edge). Also known to have multiple BSs in seats.

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Marlin, from my research on the IBM punch card I found for my Z28, "XF" is the code for an M21 with 3.73s... but your axle code of KJ is a 3.55 posi?
Maybe some of the experts can chime in for clarification? Dan |
Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Yes, it only has the left 1/3 portion of the build sheet - just enough to see the L34...

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
KF IS 3:55 POSI
KJ IS 3:55 OPEN |
Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
D-55 is the console between the seats. L34 is the 396/350 HP B95=R/End Pnl Mldg B96=R Whl Open Mldg. framingham partial sheets are common for that plant and you may only find the same copies. I have very few complete ones in my info. He is fortunate to have that one piece and it is tough to verify it is actually for that vehicle since the VIN or body numbers don't show on the portion he has. I provided some info to him on a Facebook post he made earlier. Looks like a great chevelle to have regardless. Andy

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
Thanks, I'm planning to go over to this house on Thursday night to get the code off the axle tube - it reportedly has 3.73's in it. The trans is reportedly a vintage Doug Nash unit.

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
My Framingham built car had a full sheet on top of the gas tank. Some of the info is obscured by glue/adhesive, but all the good stuff is there.

Re: Chevelle SS for '68 / '69
I have 3 full Framingham buildsheets in my file.
