NEGATIVE CABLE
My cousin has a 69 Malibu with a 350 engine. He recently purchased the correct spring ring type battery cables and discovered that the negative cable is about 6-8 inches too short to bolt to the thermostat housing like the assembly manual shows.. He has tried some other parts distributors and all the cables seem to be the same length. He is certain he does not have a big block cable. Those only bolt to the passenger side of the block..
He has since figured the most likely problem is the posts were reversed on the original batteries. On his current battery the negative top post is on the left side of the battery as your looking at the front of it... In lieu of changing the battery, does anyone have any ideas on what he can do to make the cable fit like it is supposed to?? Thanks... Rich |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Rich,
I HAD THE SAME PITA Problem.....no one makes the correct correct size negative cable for a SBC I MADE MY OWN I WAS ABLE TO FIND AT A LOCAL PARTS STORE....A LONG SPRING RING CABLE AND I CUT IT TO SIZE WITH A CORRECT END ON THE HOUSING. Got lucky for once. Dan |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
If someone wants to pursue this with American Autowire or whoever makes these, I can provide measurements;/part number from the original one on my Malibu. I wasn't aware that the repops were off for the SB Chevelles. The electrical aftermarket guys usually do a good job. This is surprising.

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Dan, where did you find the long spring ring cable??
Rich |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Great idea Phil... I just do not do that many SBC builds
If I do another in the future....I will definitely call upon you. Rich....we just got lucky and the guy at the parts store pulled it off the shelf....said it was there for years. I could not tell you it`s application? Dan |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
I take it a Camaro cable isnt the same part number or wouldnt work either?
|
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
The Small block Camaro negative cable I bought fits fine on my 69 Camaro, no issues.
|
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
What's the original part # or the Part # stamped on the negative cable, length and gauge?

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Thanks Dan...

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
I thought 69 s/b Camaro attached to the upper alternator bracket, and b/b attached directly to the block.

I would be interested in an original cable part number. We have all the original info from Packard Electric including the blueprints. We make the cables from those prints, and they are spot on. Now, with that said, we have run into a few instances where there were running changes, and that could be the issue here, not sure. What I could use is the part number off of an original cable that mounts the way you are all suggesting. I will say that in my 26 years of working here, the issue 99% of the time is that the battery is installed incorrectly (posts reversed), or the car has the incorrect battery in it. The repro batteries are not always correct. Send me an email to and I'll be happy to do some research and hopefully, put this to rest once and for all. Thanks, Donny |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Donny,
Here's what is on my '69 Malibu. It is a 350/300 car with h.d. battery and alternator, so I'm guessing this isn't the normal for 69 small block Malibu. Part numbers are: positive - 6296702MP, negative - 6296750YF. The negative wire is approximately 34" long and attaches to the rear alternator bracket/thermostat housing mount. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvccnycgm.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc0m14o8a.jpg I've got a call in to a buddy with a low mile original Malibu to see what cables his car has. Upper alt bracket and t-stat housing. At least thats how it was on the ones I have seen.. Could have been HD battery cars though.. |

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Hi Donny, This is Mike, Richs cousin. OPGI, sent the neg. cable stamped #6296745 YF. Cable that came off is marked 6296750 YF. They told me that's all they have for the SB application and insisted its the correct cable. 6296745 is 26".

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Mike,
What was the part number on your positive cable? Phil W |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Phil, pos. cable is # 6296702 MP
|
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
My buddy just checked another survivor car of his and it has a negative cable with a length of 26" and a part number of 6296745YF. The positive cable on the same car is: 6289199ML. He said this was a heavy duty set up and that it required the battery to have the positive terminal near the fender. That is new to me.
Mike I think they gave you the shorter cable. There must have been several different combinations for 69. I'll do a little more digging on this one. Phil PS. My cable codes match what is on the build sheet, so I know they are correct. |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Yep....it`s one of those that no one had the correct answer.....very frustrating.

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
Phil, assembly manual shows 2 neg. cables. 6296746 for 6 cyl. And 6269745 for V8. But it also shows a battery with neg. terminal on inboard side. At some point when batt. were made with poss. Inboard, did replacement cable 6296750 come in to play?

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
My car is a July of 69 car. Maybe that had something to do with it. My friend did confirm that his set up called for the battery with a positive terminal next to the fender.

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
That has to be it.....positive battery terminal next to the fender.

Saw many like that in my old gas station days. |
Re: NEGATIVE CABLE
I have found the following codes on build sheets, not sure about the specific part numbers or lengths but it might help someone;
