CRV engine value?

Friend of mine may sell his CRV coded 454. What I know is it's standard bore, complete intake to pan, and there is a CRV code on the deck with a partial VIN. Apparently it has been sitting for over 40 years. Can someone PM me with a guess on market value?

Thanks!

Re: CRV engine value?

Inquiring minds need to know the VIN# Possibly this engine came out of an El Camino in the the early !970's from the Joliet Illinois area with a 221144 on it, did it?

sorry guys, I have no other info on the motor today. I'll see it this week and post.
Can you give me some idea of what you think it's worth?

Thanks!

Re: CRV engine value?

Tony, my buddy has one thats coded CRV and has no VIN..hes tried to sell it for at least 5 years and no takers at $6500..no one will even haggle with him or show interest in buying it..hes hauled it all over the midwest to swaps etc...so i dont know what the value is...i would think his would be a better deal since theres no vin and has a possibility to fit many more cars but i guess it doesnt.

Re: CRV engine value?

Mark, thanks for your note. I would have guessed your buddy's motor is worth at least $6500 with no VIN...I wonder if the date code is outside where an assembly line motor would be? How complete is your buddy's motor?

Re: CRV engine value?

pretty complete carb to pan, distrib to fan..he thinks the carb is too late for the motor.with mani's..i cant remember the dates..but he said it was right in them middle of production, what ever that means.

he thinks its all standard and was sitting in a machine shop back room when he found it, its owner passed after dropingit off for a rebuild, kids didnt want the motor..and car no where around, was supposed to be a L78 for a Nova but was a LS6

I would have guessed the distributor alone is a $2000 piece....

If its complete and legit I would guess at least 9000. just all the original accesories are worth 5000

Re: CRV engine value?

It is a limited market. Only so many cars built may need it. I see the same guys at swap meets toting the same parts want high prices. They will not offer you anything for your quality parts. I got out the supposed high end parts in part because of that double standard. Also it is a long wait to find the person that needs the part. I have made way more on nickel and dime parts. This had made me stop looking for parts for my 68 Z because I am a small fish in a big pond, working hard for every dollar I make. So for now I am finishing some old projects and catching up on customer work. I chuckle when certain guys stop by my garage and I see them looking around to see what I have. That is my opinion, parts are over priced anymore. There are all kinds of conversations about the future of "The Hobby" but there seems to be a certain element that does not care as long as they are making money. Look at the HUGE discussion on here about the Yellow ZL1 that has the wrong engine, when the original engine is known to exist. Both sides can not come to an agreement on a price for it. Let the feeding frenzy begin

Re: CRV engine value?

I ended up acquiring this engine, just couldn't pass up a real LS6 that has never had the heads off. It has been sitting in a semi trailer since the early 1980s. Partial VIN is 10A132667. I may stab this into my L89 El Camino unless the original engine somehow falls into my lap!

Re: CRV engine value?

Thought I'd close the loop on this story. With the help of the LS6 registry, I tracked down the original car, which is still alive and well in SC, where it was sold new (and a triple-black M22 car at that). For whatever reason, the current owner is not interested in the engine as he believes the one in his car is the original (even though the block has been decked and it's my understanding there are no numbers/letters visible on that engine). When we spoke on the phone, he couldn't seem to get his head around how the motor made it to Michigan when the car spent its entire life in SC.

Anyway, I never would have thought this saga would end this way, but you just never know I suppose.

To his credit, the current owner of the Chevelle did offer me the car, but I felt his price was unrealistic.

So, unfortunately, there is one more highly desirable muscle car that will not be reunited with its original engine anytime soon. Maybe someone can buy the car at a more reasonable price and make a deal with me...

Time to go back outside to enjoy our amazing 65-degree weather!

Re: CRV engine value?

Well, a few interesting things have happened since February. The previous owner of this Chevelle consigned the car, and although I considered making a deal on it, it sold too quickly for me to get off my butt and get it done. The new owner of the car contacted me out of the blue, from my old Ebay ad, and it turns out he lives about an hour north of me. We made a deal on the engine and he picked it up this morning. We were both pretty elated to reunite the engine with the car...they have been separated for at least 39 years.

So, there is one more LS6 car out there with the born-with engine. Pretty good day if you ask me.

----Tony,,,I think you had more than a small part in this reunification! As an aside, while looking at the cars pics I noticed a new way to run a fuel line,,,,not! Car seemed real decent, though now I suspect it will rise to the next level......Bill S

Thanks guys - yes, the car needs some work for sure but the resto pics show it was a very clean car before it was stripped and painted.

I will post pics of the car when I see it in a few weeks....
