1970 Challenger R/T

5 Attachment(s)
Hey Everyone. Well...here is the final chapter to my saga that started this last May. Some of you may remember my 1970 Challenger R/T SE here. I had previously mentioned Scott Smith (Harms) and his assistance with everything. He is a GREAT guy and tried to help me with the numerous issues throughout these past months and he actually found a buyer for the R/T SE for me. Scott also helped me find a FANTASTIC 70 Challenger R/T that has absolutely NO issues what-so-ever, owned by Dave West. Scott had known Dave from the work he had done for him over the years and Scott was also one of the judges that did a rigorous OE inspection on Dave's car at MATS (Mopars at the Strip in Vegas) a few years back. Scott personally vouched for this car and gave it a HUGE thumbs up. I'm sure that some of you have seen this car and may even know Dave West. Dave knew what I had been through (with my last purchase) and personally delivered my new Challenger to my front door because he knew that I was still gun-shy. He did so with only my word that I would purchase it on my approval upon final inspection.....no down payment. He was that confident in his Challenger and I'm sure that Scott told him that I was a stand up guy and could be trusted. Dave is also a great person that is all for the hobby. These two guys (along with many of you) are what makes this a GREAT hobby and have restored my faith in it. Kudos to Scott Smith and Dave West.
So here it is....what do you guys think? It was personally fully inspected my Galen Govier and totally authentic with all numbers matching. Per Galen's full report, it is 1 of only 2 Dodge Challenger U code(s) to have a shaker hood. The second one is black but has lost it's original drivetrain many years ago. The color combo, from what has been said and researched, is a 1 of 1. Together, this makes this one rare Challenger. The Challenger runs and drives fantastic....my wife and I both love it.

Previously, I have received emails from some of you guys here and wanted to give you all an update. Hope you all like it.

Craig

Beautiful car Craig! I saw it when it came out to the MATS show and it was just striking. Very unusual color combo, top notch restoration, and that extremely rare 70 Challenger shaker hood option! You are exactly right about Scott and Dave, and you've got every right to be proud of your very cool car. Congrats!

Very cool car. I remember seeing this car before and was amazed at how uniquely optioned it was. What is the paint color/code?

Thanks Wade. I cannot say enough about Scott and Dave. Both are extremely knowledgeable. Dave is working on a car for someone now that hopefully should be at MATS next spring. Don't want to spoil the grand opening so I'm not going to say what it is, but I can't wait to see it. Too bad it's not going to be ready for MCACN.

If you guys dig the OP's car, check this one out:

http://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/12/18/65/27/dy3__f10.jpg

However, I must take issue with the "1 or 2" comment - that's from Galen's Registry, so that means it's 1 of 2 known 440-4 Shakers in his registry. To the non-Mopar fans out there, Shakers are much more common on 440 Six Pack and Hemi Challenger R/Ts, but the single 4bbl. Shaker units were slow to trickle out to the public in 1970.

As far as the color combo, there's no way to know it's 1 of 1 because Chrysler's records didn't keep option combinations, but red stripes are quite rare for any color (usually found on white and black cars), and DY3 is already quite rare for the R/T.

agree 427TJ. When my wife and I saw the pictures....we weren't too sure if we would like it. Scott Smith assured me that the pictures do not do the car justice and that it absolutely pops when you see it. His words about this car is that "this is one of the nicest Challengers on the planet". She is an absolute stunner and different. Thanks for your reply.

Glad you like novadude. Not too many years ago I owned a 70 Nova L78 4 speed paint code 75. Manual steering, no radio, rubber floors. Purchased for speed only. BTW....all #'s matching. It was a great car.

Absolutely correct 442w30. 1 of 2 known to exist. I did a lot of homework before I finalized the deal with Dave West. I looked everywhere and talked to a lot of guys that are "in the know". There is also a shaker registry. I talked to the owner (Travis) of that registry in detail. Travis only know of two U codes....mine and the black 4 speed. The 440 Six Pack and Hemi Challenger was where you would see the shakers implemented. There was also a hood change for the 70 model year for shakers....to add crumple zones to the hood. My car has a May build date and also has the updated hood.

You got that right 68I30. I'm a huge fan of the B5 also. Almost purchased my 09 in B5 blue. Great color. Many wil disagree...but I really like green. To each his or her own.

Here are the builder words:

Here's a replica of a '70 Challenger R/T I saw on a calendar, a 1 of 1 car, DY3 cream color with white vinyl roof, red bumblebbe stripe and red interior, shaker hood, 440 4bbl and automatic transmission.

I used the yankee challenge AMT kit, added details with evergreen strips on the chassis and many parts from other kits, added fuel and brake lines, handbrake cables, and some other details here and there...

Re: 1970 Challenger R/T

I am trying to contact the builder and am in hopes that he will sell me this model of my car that he made. I doubt he'll want to part with it, but I'm going to try anyway.

Oh wow if I ever saw a model of my car I'd do what ever to get it or have the builder build you one as well.

Pretty cool.Great color combo as well.

If he won't sell you that one, maybe he'll build you a replica of it from another AMT plastic kit.

Very nice! I remember when that car came up forsale and loved the attention to detail and rarity of it. Scott is a great guy that has helped me with information more than once over the years.
You should be very proud of what you have there.

What is the story you were speaking on about another Challenger? Have a link?
