Ervin:

There are quite a few "tells" on the repop tags. However, the more recent tags are getting better and better, and much more difficult to identify, even for experts such as Kurt S. and Mark C.

The NCRS learned the hard way to be careful publishing tells. They have identified over 30 defects or tells on repop Corvette tags. Many members were asking for some clarification of those defects. They published 6 of the 30 plus. Within a couple months, the fake tag makers started cleaning up the repops. Those 6 tells were no longer discernable on the fake tags.

So.... although it may sound elitist and snobbish to refuse to disclose and discuss all the issues with fake tags on a public forum, that is probably the best approach. The more that is disclosed on forums such as this, the better the fakes get.

Thanks for the info. In essence what you're saying is that a person should post a picture of the trim tag here & ask for an opinion on whether it's fake or not before contemplating purchasing.

Or spend years of studying correct tags vs repop tags.

I'm retired so I have nothing but time to learn the difference. Not to hijack this thread but what the scoop on this trim tag? Hopefully it's not fake.

Re: Opinions on this TT

Looks good to me. Similar to my 08A tag.

If someone is considering purchasing a car, he or she doesn't necessarily need to post here, or any public forum. Not everyone wants to go public with this stuff. Although personally, my opinion is that a car with a fake tag should be exposed... period. Others may disagree.

There are several guys on this board and on the CRG site who are really experts at fake tag spotting. They are usually very helpful and responsive to PM's.

Re: Opinions on this TT

Like others have stated. Its real. I am by no means an expert. I have just spent my life with these cars and have spent time studying and researching. Granted not near as long as others..

Mr. Shauger and many others; including CRG members, that I have learned a lot from whether they realize it or not.

you can learn a lot from the rear of the firewall where the rivets come through also. they can make the tags as good as they want or even use a tag from another car they can not replicate the patina of the inner firewall where the rivets come through the fuzzy rust and the factory sealer pushing out of them. here is a photo of a 69 rs copo I was helping authenticate a while back. hopefully the photo makes it through! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...59-a11_001.jpg

Re: Opinions on this TT

Agree very much on exposing cars AND builders of cars with fake tags and/or restamped motors.

Regarding the backsides of the cowl tag rivets please use this only as a guide as many tags get removed during a restoration. I (used) to do it myself but no longer do. Obviously the inside of the cowl would be restored as well but what I am saying is just because it has new rivets does not make for a fake tag, only that you need to investigate it further.

yes sometimes they used to get removed especially back in the day my advice for checking the inside firewall would just be for survivors or unrestored inner firewalls.

This one looks blatantly bad to this novice.
