New guy that loves Biscaynes
I got my first 68 Biscayne in 1971. I was stationed at Offut AFB in Nebraska and found a real deal L72 427/425hp. 4 speed, 12 bolt 4.10 positraction 68 Biscayne. It was for sale at a local gas station for $1500 and I had just received a re-enlistment bonus. I had the car for two years and terrorized the streets of Omaha with it until circumstances caused me to sell it.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-scan0024.jpg I have regretted selling that car more than any other I have owned. So, when opportunity came a long to relive those memories I had to jump. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-dscn0057.jpg This car is a clone or tribute to my original L72 car. It is close to the same color, original was Tripoli Turquoise, this one is Grotto Blue. It has a 454 .030 over with oval port heads, solid lifter CompCams 561 lift, 282 duration cam, Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake and Holley 750 cfm vacuum secondary carb. It has a Muncie M21 and 12 bolt with 3.73 gears. It is an original V8 car and the date code on the 12 bolt indicates it could be original. I know almost nothing of the cars history. I bought it from a dealer in MN who bought it from an estate. He stated it came from Ohio and previous to that possibly Georgia. It has been a drag car, there are tow tabs welded to the frame. I am in the process of bringing it back to Day 2 shape, I have already changed the exhaust to a Pypes Street Pro system and will be removing the fuel cell in the trunk and installing a stock type gas tank soon. I look forward to participating here and gaining knowledge from all the resident expertise. Pat |

Beautiful Car...glad to have you here!

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Thanks guys, yes I have been active on the 2doorpost sight as well. Nice to have multiple places to hang out and talk about our old muscle cars.
Was thinking about the "Two Tons of Fun." Do you realize the new high performance Challengers and Camaros outweigh my Biscayne by over 400 pounds? OF course I do not have all the fancy whizbang stuff they have, or the creature comforts. |
Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Sharp car (cool 'ol pic, too!)!

Who cares?!? Those cars are like a persons south end -- everyone has one. BUT NOT many Biscaynes as nice as yours out there!! TAZ |

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Sorry, just saw this response. This car is a little better behaved, not necessarily well behaved. I don't think it is as fast, but it's been over 40 years since I drove the original. Eventually I will have it out to Sacramento Raceway for the Wednesday Night Fun Drags and get some time slips. If it breaks into the 13s I think I will be happy.

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
A lot has happened with this car in the year since I have had my "new" Biscayne. The 454 that was in it flattened a cam lobe and was replaced by a real L72 427/425 that I lucked into. It is a CE block engine made in 1970 that was pulled from a 1966 Corvette. It has been rebuilt once, .030 over with hard valve seats, otherwise stock. I have installed a new header back Pypes exhaust system, painted the wheels body color, put narrower tires in front, removed the fuel cell and installed a stock gas tank, replaced the rear springs to restore the correct ride height, rebuilt the M20 because it was leaking fluid out the input shaft (was missing the oil slinger). I have replaced the fender corner lights with blank trim pieces more likely for a Biscayne. Most recent project was to convert the long water pump to the short pump configuration and change to deep groove pulleys and the correct power steering pump. I will always identify it as a tribute car with a Day 2 theme. It's not really a clone because there are things that will never be totally correct, my goal is for people to recognize what it represents and have fun driving it! Here are a few pictures of how it looks now.

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Howdy Pat! I feel bad as you have been here for a year and I never knew it or welcomed you aboard! Love the "rendition". That is my personal word for a car that I do that mimics a car from the past. I have 2 cars that really were significant race cars back then, but these "current builds" are hardly ever exactly how they were back then. I applaud you for your honesty and transparency in describing your car. Correct parts does not a real car make........but they sure do make it a real FUN car!!!! Great to have you my friend!!!

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Pat, Looks great! You've taken her in the perfect direction... but you didn't say how she "goes" now with an L72, better?

Re: New guy that loves Biscaynes
Paul, She is stronger than with the 454, but I have yet to really "get on it" as I am still breaking in the new clutch I installed with the motor. Just rolling into the throttle it pulls very strong especially when you get past about 4000 rpm.
Thanks folks for the positive comments. I like the "rendition" term. |
