DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

Anybody have a Day 2 Exhaust system they are willing to part with ?
Looking for first gen Camaro a complete system in NOS or Mint Condition.
Have Headers: Head pipes, Mufflers and Tailpipes are needed.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

I can't say I remember a full system on a day 2 car. Sams ol' Roof Duece was about as high tech as it got in my area. Most were a cheap pair of glass packs or turbo's both mounted directly to the headers. I ran about 8"of straight pipe and a pair of turbos. No down or out tips after. I used to be able to lay there with my leg under them to reinstall them after a romp with open headers. They were left on the side of the road or in a drieway many times. Old friends still remember and talk about that sound......I just remember the fumes and the tapping of the mufflers on the floor at idle. Dents are still there. All my money went into the motor!

Here is a neat option, " Love my Purple Hornies"

It doesn't get much more "Day 2" than this.

The Lakewood is a NOS 3 point, the mounting kit is for a 65-72 fastback Mustang. It was to go in a local Boss 9 way back when but never made it.

Yep, just unbolt the feet / rear tube annd add the correct ones for your application. Fits in my Camaro nice with some custom mods to make it bolt in without any permanent damage.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

I have 2 first gen Camaro "day 3" complete flowmaster used dual exhausts systems that are both great shape from cars that i parted out in the 90's soon after being installed. They have been in dry heated storage ever since. One is full one piece with an H pipe design. Other is 2 piece. Both are complete header flange to tailpipe. I beleieve they are both 2 and 1/2"... but it's been a while. Ive saved these figuring I would use them some day.. but at this point, my cars are all original now. Maybe not what you are looking for, but if interested Pm me and I'd take a reasonable offer. Probably difficult to ship though.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

I remember a lot of guys in the early 1980s just running glass packs off of the headers (or not too far back), and pipes that came off of the mufflers at a 45 deg angle exiting just in front of the rear tires. The same 'look' as AAR Cudas / T/A Challengers had from the factory. Dumping the exhaust under the car wouldn't pass PA state inspection, but having the tailpipes clear the rocker just in front of the rear tires was perfectly legal.

The glass packs I remember most guys using were the rounded case models like the purple hornies shown above, not the thrush style above with the rolled ends. Walker "Royal Scot" was a popular model - they were painted a dark red color.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

A word to the wise -- if you hang those Purple Hornies off the back of the header collector (no tail/extension pipes), make sure there is a hanger on the end of the mufflers. No hanger and you'll constantly be tightening the header bolts. Just sayin' ...

68l30 02-25-2015 01:26 PM

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

FWIW, I ran it that way for 20 years on a SBC...never had a problem. Then again, I had ground the header flanges (welds) true and used good bolts & gaskets.

Sometimes that weight also cracks the headers.
I ran them like BIG most of the time. Depends on how big and heavy the mufflers are. Plus, who really cared back then.
Brent has a good idea how he supported his header mufflers. Maybe he will share.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

So true Sam! Mine have dents in them to change the plugs and also to clear the AC box (flattened out a whole tube). A BFH was used to persuade the pipes. Didn't matter back then...make them work so you could drive/race it. Cheap and easy...not always right, but that's how it was done.

Absolutely! Most of the "Day 2" replica cars of today are way to nice but that is how it has to be done these days.

There are few exhaust tones that get my motor going more than chambered on an SB or BB. Down side is they rob HP - but that could be a small price to pay for that luscious sound!!!

I would believe the answer to that is stock chambered exhaust is more restrictive compared to at least 2.5" 40 series Flowmasters.

YEAH BUDDY!...that along with white painted vintage 4-flange headers and dumps on the COPO...

...as some may recall I bought these on eBay (they were NOS) and the guy shipped them from Mexico and US Customs was nice enough to drill about 8 holes in them and just tossed them back in the box never repackaging them evidently looking for drugs...I'm guessing they were trying to find their next fix...found out the dark Ford Blue hi-temp enamel color is a dead-ringer for the thrush blue, welded the holes closed and repainted...I'm just grateful they drilled in the blue and not into the artwork...

Question, any idea how long the graphics will stay on
mufflers such as Tiger glasspacks or Thrush?
Thinking about purchasing either one but concerned
the graphics will fade away after running them for awhile.
Thanks

The graphics are painted so they'll "stay on" for a while...as far as keeping the nice clean look...not long...couple hours at best...likely start seeing yellowing of the white in several minutes of normal engine running...

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

I thought I had a better shot of the cherry bombs under my car, they dump out under the rear seats.

http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...9/DSC_0799.jpg

The original Wisconsin owner said he first ran walker mufflers (sticker still under hood), and he had it dumping out just in front of the rear tire (I have old pictures of that).

I am a fan of the cherry bomb, and plan to never change the Camaro, but have to wonder how walkers sound. I also like the purple hornies (because they were on a 340 cuda I just bought). I think you can buy those new?

Here is the only video w/ sound capture of my car, with some other members. You have to scroll down a bit to see the video, once you click on the link. The car sounds bad-ass in person, at idle especially. Not so bad in the clip if you turn it up.

Appliance headers.

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova

If you're going to hang just the PHs off the headers -- you may want to support the end of the mufflers or you may have issues keeping the header bolts tight. Just sayin' ... TAZ

None the less -- it will have a bitchin' sound!
