1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Some of you may remember this double COPO. It is an original body, original motor and BE axle, very low mileage car that was painted black and had black hounds tooth interior installed in the '70s. The car had been set up for racing so had other modifications as well. After years of waffling back and forth about returning it to it's original Frost Lime exterior and dark green vinyl interior I decided to take the plunge so it is currently undergoing a nut and bolt, concourse restoration. Here is a picture of the car before restoration started and a couple of pics as it's being taken apart. I'll post progress pics as they become available if anyone is interested.

Another Indian River Copo.
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Yes, it is and it is an Indian River car.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
It will be awesome in it's original colors. Looking forward to following this one.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Frost green COPO will be very cool! Post lots of pics.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Yes Joe, very interested. Keep the pictures coming.
Who is doing the resto for you? Those colors are very nice! |
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
I don't know that I have seen another frost lime cowl induction endura bumper D80 car. With style trim it should look really slick with the frost paint, very much a sleeper.
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
That will look really cool in frost green, it will really stand out among all the other colors, will be watching for your progress. thanks Steve.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
That's way cool! I was just looking through some old magazines recently and came across that feature. I wondered what happened to that car since I've never seen a Frost Green COPO Camaro. It should look awesome when it's done. Definitely post some pictures.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
i applaud you for putting it back to original...but wow..it would kill me to take it apart looking so good in black...good luck with the resto (nothing sarcastic intended)
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Joe....long time since we've heard from you. PLEASE keep us updated on the restoration...it will be beautiful when done!
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
nice...i saw frank atones frost green Z - and when correctly is very nice...this should be equally nice.....
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
No style trim James, it's an X44 car. Previous owner added the trim which does look good!
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
I procrastinated so long making the decision to restore due to the fact that it did look great in black and the magazine article shows it in black as well. The deciding factor: the black paint was starting to act up & I already had an original 723 code interior so what the heck. I had a '69 Impala SS427 L72 the exact same color and thought it looked pretty good. As noted, it will be different at least.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Frost green/green interior will look very sharp.
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Sammy inquired about who is doing the restorarion. At the last super Car Reunion I hung out with Doug Perry and Dave McGafee and learned a lot about COPOs. when I decided to restore my car I contacted Doug for suggestions and he recommended Dave, owner of Bowtie Performance and Restoration in Grove city, OH. Dave has restored a number of COPOs for Doug and, after watching Dave in action, felt like he would be the guy for the job. He is very knowledgeable and a heck of a guy, as is Doug.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Good deal Joe. Keep the pictures coming! Again, that to me is a killer color combo!

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Great news......will it be done in time for MCACN VII?
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
I hope so Stefano but may not have any money left to get it there!!
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Joe ...if it's ready...we will figure out how to help and get it to MCACN
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Hey Bruce, I think we'll make it! Look forward to my upcoming visit.
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
kinda sad to see the balck paint coming off but I'm toldit is an original sheet metal, virtually rust free car.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
What are you/they using to remove the old paint? Paint stripper?
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
looks like a razor blade...
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Bingo!!
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
razor blade is correct. I thought it would be soda blasted but the body shop will use PpG system and they won't warranty a soda blasted body.
|
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Yes, razor blades can work great!

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
That car is in great hands for paint and body....we looked the car over good and saw how nice it was. Frank at Arone Autobody was very pleased when he inspected the car. It will be a twin to his Frost Green Z

I just removed the wheel opening moldings and welded up the sins from a X66 conv which had them added as well. |

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...83-paint_1.jpg </div></div> Me too, Joe, me too. I really wish I coulda got that one from you as is. I loved it. I dog-eared the issue of Musclecar Review that car was in when I was a kid in '85 - there was just something about that mean black COPO. I still keep the magazine handy, as it left a lasting impact. Too bad we were far apart on $$$ - good luck with the resto. They're doing a great job there... |
Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Des, I wasn't a "motivated seller"!! Everything considered I felt like the best thing for the car and my investment was to restore to stock condition. I had accumulated the hard to find parts throught the years, including the interior. The transmission was not original and had wrong date so replacing with a correct date coded & numbers M22 that is RESTAMPED with the VIN for judging only.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
Arone Restoration is very excited to be working on this great car and working with Dave McGaffee of Bowtie Performance & Restoration. This COPO has great sheet metal and floors. Much of the original Frost Green paint can still be found as we get the car stripped. I will continue to post updates. Please find the link below on the restoration started.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
I am glad that Frank is doing the project. It's a little daunting to entrust a car like this to someone but Dave and Bruce know their stuff and Arone comes highly recommended by them.

Re: 1969 double COPO resto underway .....
A few more pictures of the car being stripped. Aside for some minor rust and pinholes, everything looks good.
